i recently purchased axiom speakers. a 6.1 channel system. i got the vp150,mti60s,three qs8s, and i run the vtf3mk2 sub. my main concern is my onkyo receiver. i want to upgrade. so over the past couple of months i've looked at hundreds of receiver reviews. finally after much debating with freinds i've choosen the denon avr3805. but i do have a question about it. it says its a 7.1 channel receiver. so does this mean i'll have to buy another surround speaker? or can it be run as a 6.1 channel receiver.

It's a very good receiver, and can run 6.1 with no problem. However, if you ever wish to add one more QS8 and go 7.1 you'll be able to do that with ease.

so it is able to be ran as a 6.1 channel reciever. perfect. thanks for the help. also i was just wondering is the 7.1 for sacd because i really haven't seen any dvds in 7.1. my system is only used for dvds anyways. thats why i really don't won't to get another speaker if it won't be used on all dvds.

Smoke, welcome. There is no such thing as an actual 7.1 format; the most is 6.1 on a few DD-EX/DTS-ES DVDs. SACDs and DVD-As are 5.1 or less. The reasons for possibly using two back surrounds rather than one are first, to avoid a psychoacoustic phenomenon which sometimes results in a sound which is supposed to come from behind you instead "reversing" and appearing to come from the front if there's just one speaker directly behind you. Dolby, THX, etc. all suggest using two back surround speakers even though there's only one back channel. Another reason is that DPLIIx and Logic 7(in some receivers)can be used to derive separate information for the 6th and 7th back speakers from both two and five channel source materials. So although there's no "real" seven channel material, the 7th speaker can still be useful.

thanks for the help and info. as of now my 6.1 one system sounds great no sound coming from where it shouldn't. mabey after i get my denon reciever i'll save up and get another qs8. i got another question about the denon reciever. i was looking at a reveiw that said if you weren't using your zone 2 or your surround backs you could bi amp it too your front speakers. since i'll be using one surrond back there well be only one left. but the zone 2 won't be used. so is it possible to do that or is a guy just asking for trouble.

Smoke, you couldn't use the 3805's internal amps for both back surrounds and zone 2(or "biamping"), since there's only a total of seven available. Despite the article, there's very little benefit in the type of passive biamping (as compared to true active biamping with an external crossover before the amplifier)which is involved. Certainly there's no "doubling" of power, which is sometimes said.

thanks for the help. well i won't be considering that as an option now. i found the article interesting. but couldn't figure out why denon would not mention any of this in there reveiw of the amp. the article i read this about was on the audioholics website. but on the denon site there was nothing stating it could do this. the power it puts out in 6ohms would be lots for the size of my room. but it would have been nice if i guy could have used it like that for the fronts. i guess if i move my system to bigger room i can always get another amplifier to help it out.

The AVR3805 is a lovely machine, it powers 7 speakers in my house, plus the sub (although that's powered)... You'll have lots of fun with it I'm sure.

I have read that review and the author states that Denon does not claim bi-amping can be done with that model receiver. He then goes on to tell you how to "rig it."(that's my description) ;-) Denon's top model receiver is configured to bi-amp the front channels if you choose to do so.
