Doing a little (stere) listening off the ol' iPod on the M50s, and Twist and Shout by the Beatles came on. It's recorded in mono, and sitting here in the sweet spot, I could swear I had a speaker directly in front of me. I love things like this...

It's been my experience that any pair of speakers will create a convincing phantom center when reproducing a mono signal. Room acoustice and speaker placement help solidify the effect, but it doesn't take a great speaker to do it.
