Is there a problem with using the QS4's with the the M60ti's? I noticed none of the home theater packages use this combination.

I think it's mostly trying to match efficiency & power handling but not sure -- no sense having "mighty towers" if the surrounds can't keep up. If you're going for 60s more for frequency response/bass/sound quality then matching with 4s might work well.

This is probably a "call the nice folks at Axiom" question.

I don't believe there would be any problem, whatsoever, using the QS4s with the 60s.

IMHO, the reason you don't see the QS4s in a package with the 60s is because of room size. It is assumed the 60s will be used in areas where the QS8s would be a better choice. On the other hand, many of us have the 60s and QS8s in rooms where the 22s and QS4s would work just fine.

If your room is small to medium, the QS4s will probably suffice. But, if your room is large, I suspect the QS8s would be a better choice. However, John's suggestion to give Axiom a call is a good one. They will not try to hype you into something you neither need nor want.

My room size is 16'6"x11'x9'. I’m trying to decide if it would be worth the extra 200$ to go with the m60's rather than the M50's and save on the surounds by going with the QS4's. Would you guys/girls say the M60's sound the same / better / worse given the same room acoustics, speaker placement, seating position, etc than the M50's? What are your opinions?

Whoa, you don't know what you just set off with that question

Depends on what you mean by "better". General consensus is that the 60s are a bit more accurate and have a bit more "clarity" due to the extra midrange driver, while the 50s sound a bit more "relaxed" and are more tolerant of so-so recordings. Look up the "BBC dip" if you want to get really confused... that's not quite the same as the 50/60 difference (BBC dip is a dip in on-axis response, 50/60 difference is a dip in the same range due to weaker off-axis response by the 6.5" driver) but the idea seems to be pretty much the same.

Best guess is that sitting close you wouldn't be able to hear the difference, and as you got further away and reflected off-axis sound became more of a factor you would start to hear a slight difference between the two.

The difference is supposed to be pretty subtle.

1 - M60/M50.

Generally it is said that the M60's, as mentioned by the previous poster, have a clearer midrange and will bring out vocals a bit better as it has the midrange driver. The M50's are closer to the M3's and M50's in sound - a more laid back sound. By laid back, we mean the midrange is slightly less loud, so it sounds recessed in a sense. I own the M3's and M80's (which are almost identical to the M60's in sound) and prefer the M80's, but both sound amazing.

If budget is a concern, and you are going to use these speakers mostly for HT, then personally I would get the M50's (or 40's if it was even more of a concern). If you want the clearer sound of the M60's, try the M22's and combine them with a sub. I used to have that setup and it's very sweet. The M22's are extremely transparent speakers.


2 - QS4's

yes, they will match nicely. They will just put out slightly less sound. In a room your size, however, they will fill them nicely.

That being said, the QS8's will, of course, envelop you in sound and spread the sound out more. It's a matter really of budget at this point since the QS4's now use the same tweeters as the QS8's, and thus the same in the entire Axiom line. Axiom used to put a tweeter with a smaller voice coil in their lower priced models.

My room size is almost identical to yours and I have QS4s and NO complaints. I just wish I had room for M60s.

I've M60, QS4 and VP100 in 13 x 13 x 8 (roughly and open to kitchen and hallway) and I'm perfectly fine with the performance.

I went for M60 because I calculate by the time I get M22 plus stand and sub, the cost is not much difference. I listen mostly music and HT is around 30%.

Put it this way, set your budget and go from there. I don't think the difference is that much if any. We shouldn't stress ourselves to the limit (in my opinion only) just to get that extra 5% - 10%.

Not my money but it seems to me that this is a case where a little $ buys a LOT more product.
