I believe he is using a tube preamp but a ss amp (Nad).

Yup, Tube pre, SS power. I just run the preamp output to the power amp inputs on my integrated, bypassing the NAD's preamp section all together. I really like what the tubes bring to the sound, no telling how they wuold sound with all tube power. I just went the cheap way to get the tube sound but still have loads of power.
The tubes i like the most have a clearer and more bright sound rather then those that are laid back, the great thing with tubes is that you can change the sound of your rig completely by just swapping them out.

I'm running a pair of M80ti's with my foreplay preamp and a Marantz MM9000 power amp. I also have a Cayin TA-30 Tube amp that is sweet with Axiom speakers, I switch around Amps and speakers between a set of M22ti's M3ti's and the M80ti's
