I have a room with the following dimensions 12'(L) x 15'(W) x 8'(H). The TV (47" Rear Projection) and speakers connections (Room is pre-wired for Home Theater) are located on one of the 15'walls. I need to place the sofa against the other 15' wall to get at least 8' of viewing distance for my TV. I want to setup a 6.1 or 7.1 Home Theater, but I have a concern on the dimensions of my room and where to place the rear surround speakers (channels 4,5,6, & 7) since the sofa is against the wall. Basically, my question is what will work in my situation a 6.1 or 7.1 setup? or stay with a 5.1 setup? Also, I already have two (2) 8" Subwoofers, but will be purchasing the rest of the speakers from Axiom Audio, as well as a new receiver and DVD player (I need advice on this also). Please help me with what would be the best setup for my room. Thank You.

I'd stick with 5.1.

M22ti mains
VP100 center
QS4 surrounds

I'd place the surrounds either to your side on stands or on the wall behind you.

Denon is pretty much the king of dvd players right now. Best bang for your buck. What's your budget on the player?

If you don't mind running some wires, I would suggest changing the orientation of the room so your display device is along the 12' wall. In fact, this weekend I finished converting my den which is roughly the same size as your room to a listening/movie room. Even though I had a window to contend with where I wanted to mount my plasma, I used the longer dimension for my room length, allowing me to install a complete 7.1 Axiom system.

If changing the orientation is not an option, I agree with the previous reply and would stick with a 5.1 system using stands for you surround speakers.

Good luck

Elias, a belated welcome. When sitting very close to the back wall it's unlikely that a very satisfactory back surround effect can be obtained with a 7.1 setup. There have been some who have reported that placing the 6th and 7th speakers on or near the floor along the back wall and firing up at the ceiling was reasonably effective. It may be advisable to stay with 5.1 and to mount the side surrounds about 6' up on the back wall and widely separated, possibly about 1' from the side walls.

Welcome Elias,

I'll echo what some of the others have mentioned. Since your couch will be pretty much against the back wall, I'm not sure having a 6.1 or 7.1 setup would be worth it...you really want some space between you and the rear speakers to get the full affect. I would suggest a 5.1 system for now as the Qs4 or Qs8 design will give you an unbelievable experience. If you place them to the left and right of the listening position, the quadpolar design will wrap you in sound, and the rear tweeter should bounce off the back wall. I have 4 Qs8's but have like 6 or more feet to my rear speakers.

I am actually thinking on getting the following:

M60 (Mains)
VP150 (Center)
QS8 (Surrounds)

Do you think this is to much for my room (12' x 15' x 8')?

Also, my budget for the DVD player is $500. And I really want a DVD player with HDMI Output, since my TV has a HDMI Input in it.

The receivers I'm considering are the following:

Yamaha RX-V1500 ($799)
Denon 2805 ($899)
Yamaha RX-V2500 ($1100)
Denon 3805 ($1200)

Please let me know what you think.

That would be an awesome setup in your room. My room is 13x18x8. I sit 9 feet away from my m60's and they are not overpowering at all. You'll be fine. Plus no more upgraditis if you go for that package.

The Denon 2900 is championed around here for good reason. You can pick one up for a little over 500 from places like ecost. If Spiff is still alive he'll tell you all about it. Don't know if it has hdmi. If it doesn't you can always get an adapter(dvi-hdmi).

Any of those receivers mentioned will get the job done. Just pick the one that has the features you want/need and go for it.

I'm in a room your size and I'm using 3 M60s for my front speakers. If your budget will allow it, I wouldn't worry about your room being too small for M60s. In my room, they sound great. My seating position is approximately 7 feet from the speakers.

I hope this helps.

The Denon 2900 does not have digital video output...no DVI or HDMI.
