Hi,

The place I targeted for the home theater in my basement
is a wierd shaped open area.
It has 12x12 niche in front where I placed the TV and two fronts (M60Ti).
On the both sides from the listener are open areas streching
over 15' each side, so the back wall is about 30' wide.
I do not want to put surround speakers in their classic
position since they will be in the middle of the open space
and people will knock them down all the time.
What I am thinking is to put surrounds on the back wall.
Is this a viable option?
I am planing to use 5.1 only.
What is the best choise for those speakers given the
geometry of the place - QS8 or M3Ti?
I am affraid if I put QS8 the sound will not be confined to the listening area only.

Your opinions are appreciated.

Hi,

The size of your room is sufficiently large that no matter which type of speaker you choose, there's going to be lots of reflected sound happening, so it's unlikely the sound would be "confined to the listening area."

The M3ti is not a good tonal match for the M60ti. The QS8s would be a much better timbral match and would deliver better envelopment, particularly since you don't want to mount them in the recommended side positions. Actually, why don't you wall-mount them at the sides? The QS8s are supplied with wall-mount brackets. You'd use the setup menu on the receiver to dial in the necessary delay for the surrounds at a 15-foot distance.

Alan,

The reason I do not want QS8s on the sides is that my side
walls "end" at about 12' from the front wall.
Then the area becames wide open with a bar on the right
and a small office space on the left.
I actually do not have side walls close to the listener.
So my basic question is whether surrounds would work if they are ~ 5' behind the listener and 5' on the sides.

Thanks,
VR
