Hi freesey,

Progress, progress. Yep, Dolby Digital Plus has the capability of encoding 13.2 channels. So start saving!

It will be the soundtrack standard for High-Definition DVDs, if they ever settle the idiotic format war and agree on one standard.

Now, as to the 13.2 channels, DD Plus will have that capability, but the question that remains is whether or not it's practical to assign that many channels for sound recording and reproduction. It might be nice to have another discrete channel for height information, and perhaps a couple more just for spatial effects, but I wonder how many will actually be utilised.

As it is, DVD-Audio already has the capability for eight channels, but it's seldom if ever utilized. Most music and soundtrack producers have difficulty properly using four or so.

Still, it's interesting to speculate on, and in theory, the more channels you have, the more realistic the potential soundfield reproduction.

Regards,

Jeeeez, now I have to go speaker shopping. Just when I thought I was done.

YEAH RIGHT!!!!!

5.1 works just fine and dandy. Enough is enough already. This to me at least is just another excuse for manufactures to dinosaur all existing equipment that much faster and come out with bigger amps and receivers that of course will sell for a ton more money!

Dolby Digital Plus is also supposed to be uncompressed, like DVD-A. So I am curious if it will sound as good, if not better, than PCM lasediscs from years back. Current Dolby definitely has limitations, and it will be nice to have a format without limitaions cause by compression.

as far as I know, all these formats are backwards compatible with plain stereo. Everything can mix down to a left and right channel.
