Thinking backwards I would give up my center channel first then surrounds and good luck taking my sub or fronts away from me. It just couldn't happen.

My feelings are you go as big as you desire on the mains because your mains are everything. Then invest in a great sub. A sub may only cover a tiny piece of the frequency range but it adds more to a system than almost anything else. I am continually blown away at how much my Hsu sub adds to music and movies. It is FAR more an essencial piece than any surround sound element could ever be.

John, I decided to take another look at the HK635 manual. As usual, ambiguities and semantic subtleties prevail, but since I can even navigate the morass that is the Internal Revenue Code fairly well, I plunged forward. Beginning at the bottom of p.27 it says that when "large" is selected for the mains, a full-range signal is sent to them and that depending on the sub setting, bass and/or LFE may "also" be directed to the sub. The use of "also" implies that it can go someplace else too. Then at bottom middle of p.28 it says that when the mains are set "large" and sub "none", "...all bass information will be routed..." to the mains. So, it appears that it does work that way.

Enjoy the music, not the equipment.

It must be comforting to be able to read a Japanese to English translation done by a Japanese. It often is totally beyond me.

Red,

You may be able to save some more money on your receiver by looking at the Pioneer VSX1014-TX. It's a well-regarded unit as far as providing a great bang/buck value. It also has the added advantage of being recently superceded by the 1015 so you should be able to find this unit at a great price. You can read a lot about it over on AVS and most likely get any questions answered. Of course, you can ask me anything about it as it's the receiver I bought for my system.

Interesting. I'll take another read through the 630 manual. I did some testing to see what the receiver actually did but I'm having a tough time remembering exactly what testing was performed. That's not a bad sign. Then again, the coffee hasn't kicked in yet so maybe it will come to me

Thanks !!

Ravi,

For the Denon 2805 there is an option to send the LFE signals to either the sub OR the sub+Mains. I send it to the sub+Mains when my basshead friends come over.
