what do you guys think is the better subwoofer. i would use it mostly for music which i listen to almost everyday and movies that i watch once a week. im from the philippines and the brands most recommended arent available here like svs and hsu. or i have to pay astronomical delivery fees. of the subs i auditioned here, i cant seem to decide on the following:

1. klipsh rw-10 (ported)
-Bass-reflex powered design, 10" front-firing aluminum cone woofer, 280w BASH digital hybrid amplifier, 25Hz-120Hz ±3dB, 39 lb.
-- MSRP: $ 499.00 i could this for 24,000 pesos here

2. velodyne cht-10 (ported)
- i could get this for 24,000 pesos

3. usher sw-103 (ported)
- * Sensitivity:88dB 1watt/1m
* Nominal impedance:8ohms
* Frequency response(-3dB):28Hz~180kHz
* Power handling:100watts
* Dimensions(wxdxh):33cmx49cmx48cm
-i could get this for 19,000 pesos

4. wharfedale sw250 (sealed)
* Amplifier Power: 250W
* Input Sensitivity: 325mv/150W
* Frequency Response: 30Hz-110Hz
* Maximum SPL Crossover: 35Hz-85Hz
-MSRP: $ 700.00 i could get this for 20,000 pesos here. wharfedale products cost cheaper here in the philippines.

5. dali concept sub (sealed)
-DALI Concept Sub
Frequency Response [Hz] 29 - 170
Nominal Impedance [Ohm] 20 k RCA stereo/35 k RCA LFE
Maximum SPL [dB] 110
Enclosure Type Sealed
Amplifier 160 W RMS
Low Frequency Drivers 12"air-dried pulp cone
Dimensions (H x W x D) [cm]41 x 38 x 42
Dimensions (H x W x D) [inch]16.1 x 15 x 16.5
Weight [kg]/[lb.]21.2/46.7
-i could get this for 21,000 pesos

or would it be better to get wharfedale sw-150(ported) cause it only costs 9000 pesos here. this sub won product of the year in whathifi. would the performance that i would get be negligible if i opt for the higher models listed above? or would i be dissappointed in the long run if i get the wharfe sw-150.

hoping that you guys could help me. thanks a lot.

Hmm, I haven't heard any of those subs. Closest thing I've had is a Klipsch ksw12. I've heard some good things about the Velodyne CHT. Last week, however, I went to a store where they had a Velodyne SPL 1000 II playing and I didn't like it at all. Sounded sloppy and loose. I didn't spend much time in the room and didn't look to see how it was set up. Maybe the sales guy didn't know what he was doing.

From what I've read, sealed subs are supposed to perform better for music. It's purely subjective, but I'm sure there are differences in sound between ported and sealed subs. The Velodyne I heard was sealed, but sounded nasty. May not be the subs fault but the sales guy.

Wharfedales seem to be gaining momentum in the bang for your buck products. Looks good for the price, but again, I haven't heard one.

The majority of music doesn't go below 34Hz (this directly from Hsu), unless you are a pipe organ fan. So all these subs look like they can suit your purpose. I'm sorry I can't be much more help. Hopefully someone else has some direct experience.

I'm found myself faced with a similar predicament as yourself.

Have you considered a DIY sub. Its easy to beat the performance of any mass market sub. Parts Express are a good place to buy from and ship internationally and there's lots of helpful advice available at the Home Theater Forum:DIY section. I've built a ported 12" Dayton DVC but for music a sealed 15" Tempest or Titanic would be magnificent.

I have Velodyne CHT 12 and CHT 8. I auditioned everything that was locally available and Velodyne beat them easily in terms of price to performance. This includes, Klipsch, Polk Audio, Infinity, Sony, JBL. KLH. Yamaha and several other brands I can't remember. I remain extremely pleased with both of them. I can't comment on the other brands you mention in your post because I haven't heard them. At this point, my general take on Velodyne subs is that other companies like Hsu and SVS (and maybe others that aren't available to you) are probably providing a better product at the low end of the price range but a Velodyne sub is still a high quality sub from a company that essentially specializes in subwoofers so you can't really go wrong with it.

Do you guys really think that adding a subwoofer to a 2 channel music-dedicated system will improve the sound? I have M60s and am quite happy with their bass.

My opinion is yes the 60s do sound better with a sub for 2 ch music, definitely.

I just returned for a weekend trip. Listening in the other room while my son was watching a dvd, I thought to myself that something didn't sound right. I finally went in and watched some Phantom Of The Opera. Then I remembered that I had turned off the sub. What a difference!!. Get the sub.

Ya, that happens here when one of the roomies powers up the system and does not turn on the BFD, only takes a few minutes for me to tell. I need to work on a way for the BFD to use the Halo trigger system.

But yes, I as well recommend at least one sub even with just a stereo mode.
