I'd love to buy the M80ti's but I have a Yamaha 5740 receiver (100 Watts). Can anyone tell me if I can drive the M80Ti's with my receiver?

Thanks,

Marc

Hey Marc,

I know that Axiom usually says stay with Denon, HK, or seperates cable of 4-ohm. It seems I did see another member recently ask Yamaha the same question, and was told yes. However, I can't remember the model, it might have been the 5790. You might try searching.

Any reason you don't want to look at the 60's, they are very very similar. The 80's can play at more insane levels, not sure your 5740 could produce anyway. How big is the room?

Marc,

Hello & welcome. I am driving the M80's with a Yamaha 5660 with no issues. I can turn it up to -15 and it is very loud. (Sorry no dB meter) I only listen at that level by myself, as it is too loud for the rest of the family. I have tried going higher but it starts to distort, and all the joy I was feeling - leaves. It runs fairly warm, but I have yet to have it shut down. The key is that I am in a room that is only 16 x 18 x 8.

Randy hit it on the head - If you are going to have the system in a fairly large room, (and you like it really loud), the Yammy & the 80's are not a wise choice. Either buy the 60's or get a new receiver.

As a side note, I am having a new house built. The system will be in about twice the size of room, AND half of it has 16ft ceilings. We'll see how the Yamaha holds up. I see a separate power amp in my future.

Hi Marc

This is my first posted reply - just joined the Axiom club yesterday.

I have M60ti's (8-Ohms) and they will play as loud and faithfully as you will ever need in all but the largest room. However, if you're sold on the M80s, your Yamaha receiver has an 8-Ohm/4-Ohm switch on the back panel that reduces the overall power output but prevents overload. The M80s are more efficient that the M60s so you should be able to achieve similar SPLs. My sister has a Yamaha 5760 driving her 4-Ohm Paradigms and has no problems.

so have y'all done any 'haed-to-head' comparisons of your 60's and her paradigms? she might get jealous!!

hopefully if craigsub ever gets his act together, we will have a fair and blind test of several of the bigger offerings from a few of the major speaker manufacters. i am looking forward to how that turns out!!

Actually bigjohn, I gave my sister the Paradigms when it bought the M60s. When they arrived I compared them side by side. The M60s offered the exact improvements I was looking for - better midrange, tighter bass and extended highs. And they play real loud with no distortion. However, the Paradigms are a nice match for her brighter sounding Yamaha electronics.

I don't get the "Singing Bush" reference. I'm Canadian "Eh"!

its El Guapo.. pernounced, El Whappo..

literal translation is 'pretty' or 'handsome', depending on gender.

i have only seen 2 movies that can make me laugh sooo hard, i almost pee myself.. one of them is 'Dumb and Dumber', and the other is 'The Three Amigos'. both movies are so completely stupid, they just go into their own odd level of humor.
