I've been experiencing a very pronounced hum problem that has defeated all normal troubleshooting. I have now isolated the problem, I believe, to a relatively new TV (a Sharp 27").

The TV seems to induce loud hum into cables (audio or video) that pass near the rear of the set. The hum increases or decreases in volume if I move the cables closer or further from the back of the set. The hum disappears completely when the TV is powered off. The TV causes hum even when it is not directly connected to my audio system. Being near cables that are connected to the receiver is enough. Everything is inside an entertainment center, so it's hard to keep the cables far enough away from the TV to reduce the hum to tolerable levels. The cables are high quality Radio-Shack type shielded gold-tipped ones.

Does anyone know if this problem indicates a malfunctioning TV? Or is this to be expected? I don't want to send the TV in for warranty repair if I'll get back one doing the same thing.

Thanks for any ideas.

Sounds to me like a defective TV (hopefully not a design defect). Have you consulted Sharp tech support about this?

Cheers!
