Hello, my brother just graduated law school and i wanted to buy him a speaker set up as a graduation gift. I'm hoping to get speakers, subwoofer, reciever, wires, cd player in the set up. I'm wanting to spend max 1.5k, and I would like to use the m22ti's as the speakers.

thanks guys

louis

Are we just talking for CD/Stereo listening or possibly also Home Theater DVD watching? It may be hard to fit that cash limit for everything, including a receiver and cd player.

Well, a DVD/CD player would be better although there is a possiblity that the dvd/cd player wil not be needed

How big of a room will the equipment be used in?

First of all, you're a darn good brother. I think my brother got me a law dictionary when I graduated law school.

Second, since you're working with a limited budget and will likely need to cut corners on your system to meet that budget, may I first suggest you save a bit of money by going with the M3's rather than the M22's.

I own both, and they're both superb speakers. I do use the M22's in my main system, but I would not hesitate to substitute the M3's if need be. The M3's lack a bit of the clarity and transparency of the M22's, but do have better bass. The M3's are just great for the price.

For the receiver, you might want to look at a refurbished Denon from ecost, or maybe a receiver like the Harman Kardon 235 (check H/K's e-bay site for refurbs). You should be able to get a good receiver for around $300-$400. Maybe the Pioneer 1014 that gets good reviews.

The usually suggested cheap sub is the Dayton sub from parts express, which usually runs about $100. Better subs a bit up in price are the Hsu STF-2 and SVS PB10.

I'm not sure what to suggest for the DVD/CD player as I'm not quite sure what you are looking for.

Wires, stay away from Monster. Go with Radio Shack, Parts Express, Acoustic Research, etc.

Good luck.

Speaking of cheap subs, has anyone tried the Fluance subs ? They seem pretty cheap ($199 US for the 10" / 150W and $299 US for the 12" / 200W) but no idea if they are any good...

I have not tried the fluance but I do have the oft mentioned Partsexpress Dayton 10 inch sub. There are certainly better subs out there, but for the price it's pretty good. Of course it's 100 times better than the old htib sub I had and I've never had a nicer one so I may not know what I am missing.
They run it on special all the time. Right now it's $124.88. However, when I got mine about a year ago it was $100.00 plus shipping.

You certainly are a nice brother.

CD/DVD players are cheap, first off. For $200 you should be able to get a decent CD player, maybe more for a 5 disc dvd, I just don't know though.

Receiver - have you considered any Yamaha products? They're very flexible, reasonably priced, and perform very well. If it's purely a stereo set-up, budget $200-400 on this unit. If you'd like to give him upgradability, think 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 and budget $400-750, thereabouts.

(SUBTOTAL - $400-950)

Cables - There's no magic here. If its a two channel set-up, the speakers will likely be pretty close to the receiver - you can splurge on some shorter lengths of 12 gauge. Try eBay as well as the companies listed above. You really shouldn't have to pay more than $.25 - $.35 a foot for this - lamp wire is just fine. Interconnects are the same. Good shielded RCA or Toslink can be gotten cheap on the websites listed above or eBay. Again, nothing magical here. Budget - $100 MAX.

SUBTOTAL $500 - 1050

Subwoofer - HSU makes a great sub, but depending on the room, it might be more than you need. IF you go with bookshlef speakers, you'll definitely need something punchy and tight for the musical low end. Consider the smaller axiom subs, and fish around on the internet. Remember that you get what you pay for when it comes to subs - but how much do you really need? Think $350 - 500 here.

SUBTOTAL: $850 - 1550

Now, I realize that I've left the most important part for last. If you go lower end on all of the above, you'll have enough left over for some towers - think M50 from the warehouse, or M60 first run, no sub.... You should also be able to put together a set of M22's with this.

In the alternative, if money grows tight - consider just buying him the basics - Receiver and Speakers. Offer to help him set up the speakers etc, and rely on him to buy the CD player and connectors. Better to buy the best now and have no regrets than buy middle of the road stuff because it is all you can afford, only to have to turn around in a few years and re-buy everything. (Just a thought)

Now, speaking realistically - because he won't have any free time to listen to music, you can probably get away with a home theater in a box for $99. Problem solved...(kidding, of course).

Hope your brother enjoys!

Your brother is lucky to have you, what a great gift!!!

Buy him Rotel receiver, or even better - Rotel separates!!! He will thank you for life!!! They are available on select dealers and not online (exept for ebay and audiogon.com of course). For some info and specs you can visit Rotel Website

And of course, Axiom speakers, I have M60s for a dedicated music stereo system, and am quite happy with them.

Louis, welcome. You've now gotten three of the four attorneys who post fairly frequently here to reply(maybe 2x6 will also see this). It's great about your brother's graduation, but if he's going to be studying the next couple of months for the bar exam maybe you could delay a little bit with your gift. He's going to need to be hitting the books if the bar is coming up. Whenever you decide to go, if the budget that you mention is for a complete 5.1 setup I'd suggest to consider using the M2s as mains with a sub to reduce the cost.

Enjoy the music, not the equipment.
