I remember when Who Framed Roger Rabbit came out, people were astounded by the actors interacting with cartoons. But it wasn't the first time - it happened in Pete's Dragon and Mary Poppins. Does anyone know what the first movie was that had people and cartoons interacting?

Does anyone else get the feeling that Amie already knows the answer to this and it's just a morning-surprise pop quiz?

I was trying to avoid that tone. I figured someone would know already! I honestly don't.

Hmmmm. "The Incredible Mr. Limpet" came out the same year (1964) as "Mary Poppins" but I'm not sure which, if either, was THE first.

"Gertie the Dinosaur" from Winsor McCay around 1914 or so. Winsor stood in front of the screen and interacted with Gertie.

Shortly after, going into the 1920s, Walt Disney worked on a live action/animation feature titled "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." I think that was the title. Live actor was a little girl and she interacted with animated world.

I'm going to check my facts.

edit--changed date from 1915 to 1914.

Check that--"Alice in Cartoonland." This was pre-Mickey Mouse years. Disney as a struggling animator. Things kinda turned around for him, hmm?

Thanks so much - I figured someone would know. I've been wondering that for years. Last night we had a wicked 4 hour storm blow through - it took out our power and there was a ton of lightning. I couldn't go online, and in spite of trying 7 tealights with a mirror I found it hard to read by candlelight, so I had time to reconsider these questions . . . Thanks for filling me in!

No problem, Amie. Glad I could put some of my college education to good use. My animation class was the only 8 a.m. class I ever took (it was the only time it was offered). Strangely enough, that was about the time I started getting hooked on double espressos. Had to stop after awhile though, started getting the shakes in the afternoon. Too much caffeine.
