In the 70s (I think) owners of Advent speakers use to stack them - get 2 pairs and place the second pair upside down (tweeter to tweeter) on top of the first. This probably made the designer laugh (Kloss), but folks did it anyway.

Has anyone ever tried this with M22ti or any other Axiom speaker? How could it be done so that the inverted speaker doesn't mess up imaging and soundstaging (it's upside down, remember)? Are the drivers of the upside down speaker removed from the cabinet and rotated 180, then put back in?

I am not interested in buying a floor standing speaker, I am just interested in experimenting and having a little audio fun. Thoughts?

Operating M22's upside-down should not cause any particular problems. So, I guess you can just stack one on top of the other upside-down, without any modifications.

Thanks sushi, but I think it might cause some imaging and soundstaging problems - each speaker, since it is upside down, will throw centered images *away* from the center, for example.

Thoughts?

Why? As long as you drive the stacked pair in-phase, the horisontal dispersion of sound should be identical to the single unit, just twice taller. Of course, the vertical dispersion would be totally changed, but that should not directly affect the soundstage. And since the tweeters are close to each other in each stacked pair, the image should be well focused, at least in theory...

Go get four M22's and experiment... I am curious, too!

speaking as a very non-technical but...

...experienced listener and as one who stacked more than his share of advent and advent utilities in his day, it actually did sound pretty good. for some reason the pairing helped overcome the advent's inherent boxy sound. considering one could buy these things for $100 each in those days, for $400, you got a pretty impressive looking (important to twentysomethings) and not half bad sound speaker system.

just to show you how out of control one could get, I actually tried using four pairs of advent utitlities driven with bridged nad 3020's. let me you, when that helicopter landed in pink floyd's "the wall", even the neighbors were impressed.

of course, this kind of thing should never be attempted by anyone with any sense and ymmv.
