I thought that I should add something to my "sampler" collection... MUSIC! I have several movie samplers in DD and DTS, with all of the trailers and so forth, but I thought that it would be good to pick up a DTS audio disc. Which ones are really good to show off sound? I've heard that one of the Eagle's recordings (Hell Freezes Over) was good. I really don't care what genre of music it is, but that it is a quality recording...

Thanks!

I highly recommend Lyle Lovett's Joshua Judges Ruth CD, available in 5.1 DTS. It's a very good recording. Track 4 is particularly good and makes great use of the surrounds.

Nick, here is the DTS catalogue. (Scroll) Everything from the Morman Tabernacle Choir to Megadeth.

I heard the Joe Cocker DTS release years ago. Can't remember if the recording was good or not, but it was neat to hear the backup singers come up from behind you.

And here is the High Fidelity Review website. Excellent reviews of DVD-A's & SACD's.

Good point on the DVD-A... I forgot that I even can play that, but my Panny S97 says it can.

Nick, for a DVD-A(which also has a DTS track which can be played on any DVD player)consider this excellent disc of the gorgeous music for Swan Lake .

Enjoy the music, not the equipment.

Listened to Hotel Calif. on DVD-A last night, thought they did a great job on the 5.1, would recommend.

In reply to:

And both do an equally bad cover of "Anarchy in the UK."

Nick, I don't own any "higher resolution" CD's/DVD's, (mainly due to the fact that I don't have a compatable player!), but your post got me thinking. So I popped into Future Shop to see what DTS titles they had. Pretty pathetic selection, but I ended up grabbing the DVD-A of Automatic For The People by R.E.M. (since it included DTS encoding)

Well, I was blown away. The sound quality is absolutely amazing. EVERYTHING that isn't supposed to be there is gone. The instruments and vocals come through so clear and precise. The use of the surrounds are restrained, which I like. I can't stand when the music gets overshadowed by the engineer trying to "WOW" us with surround effects. (this preference doen't apply to movies, though!)

The only forewarning I have is the about the content. If you are only familiar with R.E.M.'s main stream songs that get radio play, you may be disappointed. The only two on this are "Everybody Hurts" and "Man on the Moon". The rest are the standard Michael Stipe weirdness.

You are right, the DTS selections are of groups that I don't listen to, so I really don't care, which is why I was asking the question. I would like something that really shows of sound quality, like you mentioned, and not just "wow" effects, but when I don't know what it what from most of the artists, I had to ask.

Thanks for the tip.
