Hi all -

I've been absent for awhile (enjoying my theater and getting ready for a new baby arrival, not necessarily in that order). I wanted to drop in to address the collective wisdom here to see if anyone knows a good source for Canon lenses.

The specific lens is the Canon EF 24-70mm standard zoom lens.

If anyone happens to know a good place to get these at the lower than typically advertised prices, please chime in. I appreciate the advice. (The reason I ask is to see if anyone knows of a deal like the one that exists on the Denon 3808 where you can save a few hundred dollars by calling a place as opposed to dropping it into your cart online at the advertised prices).

It's difficult for me to not buy camera stuff from B&H. Good and trustworthy service and fair prices.

I'm skeptical that you're going to find a "deal" on that lens. Awesome lens. Wish I had one. That'll be great for the baby.

MarkSJohnson might have tips about the suitability of the Tokino or Sigma variants, that might save you some money.

I would second B&H.

And, as Tom said, if you're not using it professionally, I would be looking at a Sigma for 1/3 the price of a Canon L lens...

Thanks guys - actually I'm doing a little research for my dad who runs a photo restoration business so I'm not sure whether the Sigma will work for him or not, but it looks like a good recommendation to save some $$$.

No cameras for me, but I did buy a new camcorder to capture the new arrival. As an aside, digital camcorders have come a long ways in recent years. I picked up a Canon Vixia HF10. All solid-state memory, high capacity flash cards... pretty amazing to be able to get 2 hours of full 1080p video on a 16GB flash card. The real beauty is that I can either take the card straight to my PS3 (using a USB card reader) and watch the videos in their full HD glory or I can copy them to my hard drive and stream them to the PS3 over the video networking features in the PS3 and it looks equally good. All this from something about the size of a Coke can. Very fun stuff.
