I would like to recess my audio equipment in the wall like the pic below. You may recognize it from the Raven Manor.




If anyone has links to similar pics or construction type series pics, can you post them here? I've been searching various forums looking at HT setups, but this takes f.o.r.e.v.a.rrrrrr. I'm looking for ideas on how to do mine and any dos/don'ts. For those that have done this yourself, any recommendations or guidance would be appreciated. I'll have to enclose the backside as it will be in a separate room and subject to lighting in that room.

Thanks! I knew I had seen another one on here before. What did you use for the enclosure, MDF, plywood, hardwood or something else? I'm assuming that you just drilled holes for the adjustable shelving.

Ours is just a cabinet we had the cabinet shop include when we did the downstairs kitchen and bathroom. I believe the inside width was 19 3/4", and we just framed in an opening in the wall so that the cabinet could be mounted just inside it. It sits up off the floor about 7" as shown, with just some framing the cabinet rests on. The cabinet shop pre-drilled all of the holes for the adjustable shelves (all 3/4" MDF).

In my case, the rear opens into a storage room so the back is totally open. This is good since we put the glass door on the front, otherwise the equipment would get too hot. If you are going to enclose the back, you may want to leave the front open. If you want to close the front with glass, you will need a fan at the top to pull the warm air out, along with a intake vent at the bottom.

I do very much like the glass door as both my DVR and AVR make noise. The front door silences it pretty well.

Thanks Dave. I was planning on using MDF and just dressing up the front of the shelves with trim. I wish that I could leave the back open, but in my situation, I don't think that's possible. Given your width, I'm assuming ~20" should be sufficient for the inner dimension. Still debating on how "tall" to make it. I'm not that creatively inclined so I have to borrow ideas from others.

Randy had a pic of the backside of his (not his backside, you perverts) somewhere, too. That was helpful. But you or he are going to have to find it yourownselves.

I wanted to echo Dave's comment about the glass doors. Though I am using a custom "cart" (Cartman?) rather than a built-in, I like having the disk drives behind the glass - provided that you can manage the heat, of course.

I think Dave's idea of using a reasonably "stock" cabinet and mounting it is brilliant. If I ever really do get enough scratch to implement a cool theatre, I'm seriously considering flying Dave in to consult. I've never seen a setup I like better than his.

Wondering what the piece of carpet is for under the PC and running up the wall a ways? My guess is that the PC needed a little extra sound suppression.

Hmmmmm... That pic has me rethinking my approach. In order to enclose the back and keep all of the cabling inside, I'm going to have to make it fairly deep.

Does the glass door on the front cause any sort of reflection annoyances for the viewers?
