Hi All,

I have a Epic 80.500 with a Denon 4308CI. I read a lot of reviews about the Epic's and took the plunge and bought it but I don't know if I am satisfied with the output. Maybe I am doing something wrong but in order to hear nice crisp sound from the speakers I need to set my receiver volume to like -8.5db and thats when I hear real sound. I have bi-amp enabled on denon if that makes a difference.

My friend has a Pioneer VSX-90TXV with an mediocore JBL speakers and I feel his speakers sound better then mine even at -20.0 db.

Please help with some suggestions.

thanks,

sameer

Sound better, or sound louder?

Did you run Audyssy on that receiver? If so, turn it off and see if you like the sound better.

Hi Kcarlile,

I want it sound better or louder, Wifey thinks that spending 3K for the speakers and 1200 for the receiever and its not as good as the 1800$ JBL speakers :).

Where do i turn off the Audyssy?

thanks for the reply.

JBLs are probably a lot more sensitive than M80s (which are pretty sensitive), but you may need to get an external amp if you want a lot more volume.

Remember that receiver volume displays are completely arbitrary--your might top out at +15dB, his at 0dB or something completely different.

I'll let someone else answer the Audyssy question; I have a Harman/Kardon.

Also, what actual decibel level are you reaching? Do you have a sound meter?

I agree with Ken on this one. I have a 3808 and am thrilled with it.

Running the Audyssey setup has had mixed reviews. If you go into the 4308 speaker settings, I suspect you will find that the Audyssey setup has 1) set your fronts to large and 2)the sub setting is only LFE.

If you set the fronts to small and the sub to "LFE + mains", I think you will be much happier. Then you can calibrate using an SPL.

SPL meter: sound pressure level meter, often available at Radio Shack. DIY calibration, which can work out better than automatic calibration such as Audyssy.

if it is the same as the 3808 then just press the eq button on the backlit portion of the remote until it says "EQ off." make sure that the amp button is flashing at the top of the remote first

I have audessey turned off on my 3808 b/c I don't like the results. I may run it again and see if things get better or not.

according to jakewash's recent testing with the 3808 I think that if the mains are set to large then LFE and LFE+main do the same thing

oops, I meant to say that "if the mains are set to SMALL then the LFE and LFE+main setting do the same thing."

I might be wrong though- don't have time to re-read his results
