So, now that I have a display (displayer?) that will accept 1080p/24... What are the advantages? I know the player won't have to perform the 3:2 pulldown, but is there really a visible difference? Smoother motion or anything of the sort?

Also... explain 4:4 pulldown to me? I thought it could only be used with 24 fps, but I am sitting here playing a Blu-Ray at 1080p/60, and in the projector menu it is grayed out to "on".

Thanks \:\)

I watched another 1/2 hour of this movie last night with 1080p/24... Didn't notice really any difference to be honest. I guess if the player has to do less work or conversions that can't be a bad thing, though.

I did some research on the 4:4 pulldown as well, basically means the frames are each being shown 4 times per second, so I guess the display is actually showing 96 fps.

You're right in that the player has to do no conversion to 30 fps. Which since 24 doesn't go evenly into 30, means some frames have to be replicated. On smooth pans (and closing credits), you can see this replicated frame as it causes a little jutter in the otherwise fluid movement.

If the set can correctly display 24 fps that's they way to go, since films are shot at 24 fps, and now stored on the Blu-ray that way too. But some displays don't support it, or even if they tell they player that they do, then don't handle it correctly. Many also just convert it to 60 fps and show it that way with the jutter.

The reason for even 3:3 or 4:4 pull downs is that 24 fps is a kind of slow refresh, and the eye may loose the persistence of vision and see some flicker. Even movie theaters do 2:2 and show each frame twice to get the perceived refresh up to 48 fps.

I have/do notice a juddering during credits, I researched it a while back and understood it to be because of the 3:2 pulldown but did not really understood what that meant. Makes perfect sense now.
