I'm curious what the difference is between regular bookshelf speakers (M22's and VP150) placed in cabinets, verses buying their in cabinet counterparts?

I am about to build my entertainment center and I currently own bookshelf M22's and a VP150. I need to know if I should get the in cabinet speakers instead.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

The in cabinet models are designed to stick out just a hair to help avoid boundary effects. The M22s at least (the regular models) are rear ported, as well, so it's not a good idea to enclose them.

What are boundary effects? And how noticeable are they?

Also has anyone compared the "in wall" M22 verse the Bookshelf M22? Should they sound identical?

A "boundary effect" is when a speaker near a wall has reinforced bass because of it's positioning.
A speaker that's a bit "thin" in bass can benefit from that placement, but many speakers will sound "bloated"...emphasizing, for instance, that chesty, male radio DJ sound.

Everyone wants to sound like James Earl Jones!

Thanks for that explanation Mark. Another question... If I want to "hide" my speakers in my cabinet and put fabric in front of the speaker (the same color as my wood), would that effect the sound of the speaker?

And I'm still curious if anyone can tell me how the in wall M22's compare to the regular bookshelf model.

Thanks

I have read something about this matter. I don't really remember which tread, but I will look for you. If I am not mistaken the regulars had better sound, but since I am a newbie I won't try to give you an explanation. I will leave it to the pros! LOL wink

I think this might clarify your doubts a bit!

I think that thread should be a sticky, as the M22/IWOW question comes up quite often.

I'm not too worried about bass out of my M22's because I will always use a subwoofer. I do want to make sure that If I buy the in wall M22's that the clarity will be as good as the bookshelf version. Any reason why the clarity would be any different?

I currently have M22 v2... what are the differences with the v3? And are the current in wall M22's v3? or v2?
