Hi all. I'm trying to setup my home theater system and I'm getting a bit confused about how to setup the sub. I want my Yamaha 1400 receiver to be responsible for the frequency cut off to the sub. The problem I'm trying to get around is where to put the frequency cut off on the sub. In the documentation it says to turn the frequency on the sub to maximum. Does that mean to turn it to the highest frequency (150 Hz) or to the lowest frequency (25 Hz)? I'm thinking it means to tune it to the highest value (150 Hz) to allow all the fequencies that the receiver is sending. Is that correct?

Highest frequency (150 Hz) is correct, I believe. this will minimize the sub's crossover conflicting with the crossover in the receiver. If your sub has a crossover in/out (on/off) switch , be sure to set it to "out" ("off"). Then you don't have to worry about the frequency setting.

Yes... set it to it's highest setting. This, in effect, takes the subs' crossover "out of the loop" by placing it's crossover frequency way above the Receiver's lower one.

I thought I had it right. Just wanted to make sure. I haven't played around with crossover settings since I had a sub in my car many years ago.

Also.... look carefuly at the back of your sub for a crossover on off switch, some subs have them.
I asked the same question a few months ago, only to find that the velodyne I used to run had a switch on the back to turn off the sub crossover all together.

Yes Hari, since the EP125 doesn't have a switch or input to completely bypass its internal crossover, the next best thing is to set it all the way up to get it as far out of the way of the receiver crossover as possible. When you use the YPAO automatic equalization, I'd suggest that you set the 1400 to skip the crossover and speaker size auto setting and instead manually set all speakers small and the crossover at 80Hz. My experience in helping a colleague with a 2400 a few months ago leads me to also suggest that you set the 1400's auto equalization to emphasize adjusting the lower frequencies, which worked well in his room. Although your room is different, of course, as a general rule the lower frequencies are more of a problem.

I tried equalizing to the lows but I found in my room that the fronts were lacking in sound. I've tried equalizing to flat and it works so-so. I've switched to equalize to the fronts and It improved the sound quality quite a lot. I'm almost happy because the bass is sounding great as well but I think I'm lacking a bit in the mid range. I'm wondering if I should try and equalize using mids with the YPAO or if I should leave it on fronts as it is now and try and manually tweak by switching to graphic equalizer mode on the Yamaha. I'm not very skilled when it comes to using a graphic equalizer so i'm not sure how well I myself can improve upon the sound.

Anyone with a suggestion to help me out?

YES..... dont use the graphic eq... you will make yourself crazy trying to get the settings 'just right'.. and then you will want to change it when a different source material is being used(cd, dvd, tape, record, etc).. i used to have a 20 band graphic eq, and i found it best just to set a general V-pattern, and leave it alone.

if you allow yourself to get 'caught up' in trying to tweak it, you will just drive yourself insane.. trust me, its not worth the grief..
