Hi guys,

I came across the studio 60 V4 on sale today, about USD 1100, same as the M60. In comparison to the B&W 684s which i also auditioned recently, the studio 60 highs seem a bit less airy, and there was more warmth in the midbass.

What i would really like to know is how would it compare to the Axiom M60 which costs about the same price? Any particular advantages/disadvantages?

I listen primarily to heavy metal, but also like jazz vocals and instruments and high quality recordings. In my experience, speakers that are described as 'bright', 'forward' as they sound a bit too much with heavy metal at high volumes. The Monitor Audio RS6 is one example.

Thanks for sharing your opinions!

It's probably the quality speakers revealing poor recording quality of the CDs you're listening to rather then the speakers being at fault (bright etc.). I would never auditioned any speakers with any heavy metal music, but that's just me.

True, metal recordings do not have the kind of sound quality for auditioning. But if the speakers are going to play metal most of the time, i would need to know how they sound....

Anyway, on the Monitor Audio RS6, the guitars were simply 'in your face' and overwhelming everything else on Metallica's Black Album..

The Studio 60V4 handled the same material well. Any Axiom metal fans out there?

I've been pretty happy with my Axioms on metal. I'm listening to Megadeth on my Audiobytes right now. I've not heard anything on the M80s that stood out as particularly bad, aside from St. Anger.

The M60s do better with poorer recordings than the M80s do, IMO. The M60's are a little less detailed than the M80s. I would suggest looking in the Hearing Things forum for someone nearby to audion a set of M60s/M80s, if you don't find anyone contact Axiom and see if they can get a hold of anyone in your area. You may also want to consider the M50's as well which are cheaper than the M60s.

Ken what would your impression be of metal played on the M50s?

It was pretty good. I still like the M80s better. In the M50/M22 comparison, I think we concluded that the M50s were better for metal, though.

I don't think I've ever heard Dokken... sorry...

I tend more towards the Megadeth/Metallica type metal, less towards the Iron Maiden type. And very little towards the CoC type.

I can't believe you've never heard Dokken, wow.. They had huge hits in the 80's, and some in movies, especially Dream Warriors from Nightmare on Elmstreet.
