I'm ready to attach my M5HP On-Wall speakers to my ceiling to act as Top Front and Top Rear Atmos speakers. I will be using the full-metal ceiling bracket and angling the speakers towards the listening position. The speakers will be mounted horizontally, with all three drivers aligned in the horizontal plane.

My question is whether the tweeters should be mounted to the inside of the woofer when facing the listeners, or mounted to the outside? I believe I asked this question when I spoke with Debbie about getting the speakers customized to fit the full-metal ceiling bracket. If I remember correctly, she spoke with Andrew and he suggested to the inside. But I'm not sure I remember correctly smile

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Bryan

Before I got to your second paragraph, in my head, I was thinking to the inside but it wouldn't be hard to try both set-ups and see which you prefer.

Half of communication is listening. You can't listen with your mouth.

That would make sense smile But I don't relish hanging the speakers once, let alone twice...haha. I'm already scared enough just contemplating trying to hang these from my ceiling. And I'm not sure how I'm going to do it by myself since I need to angle them down and in toward the listening position. So I'd like to do it just the one time. I'm likely going to position them with the tweeters inside the woofers.

Thanks for the reply!

My thoughts are.....you are nuts. I would not mount these flat on ceiling. That's a lot of pressure on that one little screw. Actually, you would have to screw 4 screws into the back of the on wall because there is no mounting point built into the M5 on walls? Secondly, they are massive overkill for ceiling speakers.

Newf,

I am not mounting these flat on the ceiling. They are being mounted using the full metal bracket that Axiom offers for mounting speakers to the ceiling. I had Axiom pre-drill the mounting point into the back of the M5HP on-wall speakers and they replaced the speaker connections with standard speaker connections. They assured me that the M5HP would be fine with the FMB as they do not exceed the weight tolerance of the brackets, as long as they are mounted into a ceiling joist/stud, which I most assuredly will do.

This approach is similar to what other Axiom members have done for Atmos ceiling speakers. I believe nickbuol is using M3 speakers. I was originally considering the M3 but then decided to do all M5HP speakers for all suround/Atmos speakers. After speaking with Axiom, I'm confident they will work. And personal experiences shared on this forum suggest full-range speakers are suitable, and preferred, for Atmos ceiling speakers.

I don't disagree - these are likely overkill. But I purchased them at their initial price and I thought, what the hell, go big or go home smile We'll see if they work out.

I'm preparing to hang them now. Just determining final locations once I get a stud finder that confidently confirms the joist/stud locations wink

Cheers!

Bryan

Bryan have a look at the Franklin stud sensors Extremely easy to use and ultra reliable though a little more expensive.

I recently got one of their 710 series. Just put it on the wall press a button and bam it even shows the exact width of item behind wall so feels a little safer as to not hit wires and get the center of beam.

Cheers

Brendo - that's exactly what I bought! First try and it not only found the stud, but the width as well. My other stud finder was not reliable on the ceiling and I didn't have much confidence with it. This one works well.

Now I need to start drilling wink

Congrats

I've been playing with mine a whole lot since getting it can't say enough about how easy and reliable it seems to be.
