I have a pair of AX2's (The smaller bookshelf, they came in 2 sizes as I recall) that I bought in a shop I was working at in 1990. They are wonderful little speakers that served me well for over a decade. Anyway, long story short, they ended up at my parent's place while I was living in the US and they gave them to brother, before that they were in mint condition. Anyway, I got them back recently and the bottoms are all scratched up from being placed on cheap stands (the particle board kind that screw together from the top). However, there is a cosmetic crack in the MDF at the front of one of the speakers (between the grille and the surrounding lip). The damaged piece is about 2-3 cm long and a 1 cm wide.

Would it be advisable to pry the little piece of MDF and covering vinyl laminate out and glue it back into place?

I have no idea what they sound like anymore or if my brother wrecked them by over driving them, I know I'll have to cleanse 3-5 years of Jimmy Buffet out of them. \:D

I have no idea about fixing your speakers, but can you post pics of them? ;\)

Actually, I don't think there would be a problem with gluing it back in, as long as the damage doesn't extend inside the speaker. Even then, MDF is pretty much half glue anyway...

But before you rush into anything, let other people chime in. I'm no expert.

I'll add my two cents:

It's true. Ken is no expert.

I'll see if I can get those pictures up in the next couple of days.

I had a pair of AX2's bought in 1986 and sold them to my brother in 1994 as they wern't shielded. He still has them. Actually the foam on the driver(s) disintegrated. He called Axiom and they shipped him new drivers with rubber, as they don't use the foam for the very reason.

You might want to call Axiom and see if they still have cabnits for the AX2.

Just a though.

OR just make your own new cabinets out of the same type of wood you have in your house for a perfect match. They are just square boxes, much easier to duplicate than the latest design.

That's a good idea too; considering...

The AX2's that I had where infact square boxes, however I do believe that later models were tapered like the current Axiom lineup.

So depending if his are the the old style and if he is handy, it wouldn't be too hard to make new boxes.

I thought the older Axiom models come with a lifetime warranty.

I do not think a warranty would pertain to the enclosure, usually only drivers and electronic parts.
