Are composite, s-video, component and DVI cable all capable of displaying HD?

I did do a search through the posts for high definition. There seems to be mixed reviews whether component or DVI is better. I'm assuming component cables will be perfectly fine for displaying HD. Is this correct?

I don't believe so. Only component, DVI, and HDMI are capable of passing HD signals. Composite and S-Video will not.

The question of which is better seems to be up in the air. Theoretically, DVI and HDMI should be superior to component, because they keep the signal in the digital domain. Component requires conversion to analog, then back to digital in the HDTV. But, in practice, there are conflicting reports.

Jack is right on the money. I currently use Component for my HD receiver and Sanyo Z2 projector, however, I am planning on trying DVI for my Z2 in the near future. It is also my understanding that you can make longer cable runs with Component over DVI, not sure about HDMI.

Composite and S-video will not pass HD signals, nor will they pass a progressive-scan video signal. Only component-video, DVI and HDMI will pass HD signals. See my December AudioFile newsletter (click on the Home page) for more info on DVI/HDMI vs. component-video.

Thanks for pointing me to the article Alan. My question was not to ask which one was the best, just to clarify which cable could carry an HD signal. I think I'll stick to component cables for now.

BTW, I noticed your VP 150. Have you experimented with flipping it over to have it angle down towards the listening area?

could you please share your views on your TV. How does the TV feel in good light conditions, like normal daylight?

gnrajagopal,i have been a big fan of hitachi tvs for a while,and have been spending time looking at a newer set or fp,and a friend of mine just picked up a mitsubishi dlp52725 and i have to say that it had one of if not the best picture i have seen so far and it can be picked up for about 3000 usd.pic was great in lighter coditions as well,i always thought mistubishis were overrated until i got the chance to see this one-this may be the one for me

you are right about the mits, i have read real good reviews on the tv you mentioned. My ideal tv would be a lcd flat panel, a friend of mine dipped 3.5k for a 32'', man the picture was poetry. it had a 180 deg viewing angle. but they are way too expensive.

You can also get some of the newer 42" plasmas (EDTV) for less than $2K.

I have the previous gen model (6UY) and it's fantastic. I bought a DVI blade and have my HD Tivo hooked up to it. I've upgraded my HD Tivo (last nite) and now have 550 GB (yes, that's right) of HDD space for up to 70 hours of HD. Even though it's not a true HD panel, it definitely displays HD great and the cost point is there as well.
