Finally placed an order for the ep500 (after almost pulling the trigger for the SVS pc ultra)and QS8's. Funny, I received everything BUT the sub. Seems like Purolator forgot it in TO. Just my luck....

Anyways, don't laugh, but prior to this purchase, I was using an Athena P3 for a sub ( along with m60's and a vp150). But suddenly, out of nowhere while listening to a Mr. Bungle CD at moderate levels, my sub started making this weird flapping sort of sound, then all bass was lost.
After turing off the music, I noticed a pretty loud buzzing sound coming from the sub as long as it was plugged in to the AC outlet. If I would unplug it and then plug it back in, It would make a weird popping sound then start buzzing again.

I opened up the sub, looking for anything that might have disconnected, but all seemed well.

Anyone have an idea of what might be wrong? It isn't the end of the world, but if it seems like a minor problem, I wouldn't mind fixing it and keeping it as a spare.

Thanks guys...

light a candle, and dig a hole.. i think she's done!

if its buzzing and is directly linked with pluging it in, you might have some sort of power source prob, or the amp itself has gone out. you can buy replacement amps, but that seems useless with an EP500 on the way..

That's what is called an "Omen"
Do as BigJohn says and get that shovel out!
You probably won't want to listen to that old sub once the EP500 is rattling your home?

Congrats on the 500, they are nice subs in my opinion, I have the 600s but they use the same amps.

That's some funny stuff, right there.

And you know, all good humor is based in reality.

Did you speak of the arrival of the EP500 in front of the other sub?
It probably heard you, and decided that Hari Kari was a better option that being relegated to the basement or the garage.

Perhaps it was more of a bass change of command, for a fellow contryman.

Did you leave you sub alone? I'm on vacation right now for 10 days. I had to leave my EP500 home alone, but with friendly 60s' 150 and 8s'. I talked to them all and told them that even though they had just arrived I had to leave for a few days. I didn't say "vacation", but that we were going to a wedding. I gave them a full workout with "Master and Commander" and promised some "Das Boot" and "U571" on my return. Hopefully they will be ok.

Speaking of dead subs... my Hsu STF-2 has popped a driver screw... ripped the threads out the cabinet wood. Now I get an annoying buzz during deep bass.

Should caulk the driver in there, put it on eBay and get an EP175.

And as anyone that knows me here knows... it was not from being overdriven... I'm not a "junk jiggler."

Yeah that sounds pretty toast to me chief, if your sub still works and makes a slight buzzing noise, that might just indicate a ground loop hum - I have that problem on my subwoofer attached to my pc, but its not noticable unless the pc is off - heheh the sub for my pc is actually better than the one in my ht
