Now my question is will I have to replace my pioneer elite as it has no hdmi connections or can I just run a hdmi cable from my dvd player to my tv(HDMI to HDMI)will that still allow me to enjoy all the video and audio from the new formats. Glad to hear yoy are getting better, running your HDMI from your DVD to your TV will only give you video.

At the moment I'm using a coax from my dvd to the coax input at the back of my receiver, for audio purposes will this do the trick for the audio side of the equation. Thanks

That will be fine for normal audio output, if you plan on going with some of the new formats from a HD DVD player then you will need HDMI or analog cables if the player is equipped for them.

Bruce, glad to hear that you're feeling better. Yes, a single coaxial cable from your DVD player to your receiver will handle the audio. If you're otherwise satisfied with your present receiver it might not be a good idea to replace it just because of the HDMI factor. This doesn't necessarily result in an improvement in video quality on DVDs compared with a component cable connection. If you haven't studied it, Alan has a discussion of HDMI in the latest Newsletter .

To use or not to use HMDI cables has nothing to do with data transfer capabilities of the cables in question. It’s limited to handshaking and that dam acronym I can’t remember….KEN???
Michael is correct, if you want to hear the HD audio codecs (uncompressed PCM), you will need to use either HDMI or the player’s (if equipped) multi channel analogue outputs.
As far as video goes, your display will have to have DVI or HDMI (720P, 1080i or 1080P)

HDCP=High Definition (?) Copy Protection. AKA, a colossal waste of bandwidth and processing power--if you're the consumer and not the MPAA.
