Hey, folks. We're moving to a new place this weekend, and I have to hook up the speakers in a somewhat larger room (probably about 400 square feet. Right now I'm running generic 12g stuff, but I'll need more cable for the longer runs to the surrounds.

I was thinking of getting the standard Home Depot special, but I remember somebody using cat5 cable for an even cheaper solution. Does anybody remember how this worked?

I've heard of people using 2 sets of smaller guage wire, just twisting two ends together to make one 2-wire set.

I've seen lighter guage stuff like that on ebay made for running inside walls that comes 4 wires packaged in white insulation. This seems ideal for this kind of trick, if it works...

Designs using Cat 5 cable have the main problem of high capacitance, this is because of the tight twist in the braided pairs, the benefit of Cat 5 designs is that inductance is minimized, but this comes at the expense of capacitance. In some cases, the capacitance may be high enough to cause instability in the amplifier, which not only does awful things to the sound, but can also damage the amp.
