5.1 and 7.1 Out of Blu-Ray - 04/18/08 05:53 PM
Hi,
This is in response to Alan's Newsletter. I have been checking on the net and in stores and have discovered that some blu ray players (with decoder) have 5.1 out and some have 7.1 out.
Why is it that some players have this difference? As mentioned in the article do the 3 formats Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio (MA) and Linear PCM (Linear Pulse-Code Modulation) require 5.1 or 7.1 out.
Could you please clarify this doubt?

Most Blu-ray players (not all) have the ability to output Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio as a multi-channel Linear PCM signal over their HDMI outputs to a compatible AV receiver that has the ability to decode and process the multi-channel PCM signals. You'd only need to use the HDMI output jack to a compatible AV receiver.
However, if you don't have one of the new AV receivers with this capability, then you must use the 5.1 or 7.1 outputs, which are analog. The Blu-ray player does all the decoding and Digital to Analog conversion internally and outputs those signals in analog form to the 5.1 or 7.1 RCA analog output set, so you could benefit from the newer formats' capabilities as long as you have an AV receiver with 6- or 8-channnel (including the subwoofer output) multi-channel analog input set.
Few movie soundtracks are actually mixed in 7.1 channels since 5.1 is the standard for the vast majority of Hollywood film soundtracks. It may be that some Blu-ray players will interpolate the extra surround channels internally, so you could benefit from the enhanced surround cues when you use the analog 7.1-channel output set.
