I've never owned a game console of any kind in my entire life, but have been becoming more interested since realizing that my hi-def monitor and 5.1 system would just lend so much to the experience. With a minor surgery coming up that'll put me on the couch for a week or two and some great coupons/sales/price matching, I finally picked up an XBox 360 and three games today.

I'm not normally much of a fan of extended warranties, but have been wondering in this case as I think I remember reading of some reliability issues with the unit when it came out.

Anyone have any thoughts on spending $60 for a two year warranty on the XBox?

I bought the 360 like 6 months ago from Best Buy. I personally purchase "the plan" anytime the product is over like $200 bucks. I like that piece of mind.

But like you stated the 360 has minor problems. I personally experience a lockup every now and then. I will wait pry until after christmas and get a replacement. That way they atleast work out some more bugs with it.

and about game selection. I don't like the games I have to think about or are so complex I can't find my way out of a room. They give me headaches. So I get the races game or sport games. The best game I've played yet is Burnout Revenge. It's an increidbly intense racing game. The surround sound is done really well. Good luck with surgery.

I know absolutely nothing about the gaming craze but it is rare that I even consider an extended warranty for anything.

Mark, I wish you well in your up coming surgery and hope for a speedy recovery.

I think Mark is getting his ears worked on.

(Only poking fun, Mark, I wish you the best with your surgery.)

Initially, there were some reliability issues with the 360 that have since been fixed. I had one of the first units out, mine went bad and Microsoft replaced it with no hassle, since then I have had no poblems.
I've never bought an extended warranty on any of the game consoles we have owned (and we have most of them )and I have never had a problem. Not trying to talk you out of buying a warranty, but that's usually been my experience with well made products.

Hey Mark--

Sorry to hear about the surgery. Hope all is well!

Can't answer your warranty question. In fact, I've been thinking about getting an Xbox 360 as well. You said that with "some great coupons/sales/price matching, I finally picked up an XBox 360 and three games today."

Can you share with me what/where you worked this deal? I'm not seeing any deals on the Xbox, so would love to leverage your deal if at all possible.

Thanks!
Rich (whose room still sucks, but still not as badly as yours!)
Thanks for the well-wishes! It's really no big deal, just a day-surgery thing for a hernia. I just thought it was a perfect excuse to (finally!) try some gaming since I'll be laid up a bit! My wife didn't buy the line that I could spend a week or two listening to the improved bass of an EP500 over my current 350... so I settled!

I wish I had some great secrets to pass along, Rich. Circuit City was offering a free wireless controller (worth $50) and Best Buy was offering a $20 gift card. I went to BB and they matched CC's controller and still gave me the $20 card as well, which they applied instantly to one of the games. I had a 12% off "reward zone" coupon and for some reason, she took off $10 as a new "reward zone" member, though I've evidently been a member for a month or two and never signed up for it in the first place(!). In addition, I had some McDonald's "Best Buy Dollars" (been on the road a lot the last couple of weeks) that were worth $18 and some $30 or so credit on a gift card that had been lying around.

So, no real secrets, but I probably would have bought the second controller anyway, and I never seem to see the unit for anything other than $400 so getting the controller, free gift card, 12% and then that additional $10 worked out pretty well.

Knowing a had some of those McDonald's things in my wallet and the partially-used gift card already was just that much of a bonus.

That helps a lot, actually. So thanks for those tips. I missed the free wireless controller promotion. And I guess I need to out at McDonalds!

Enjoy the new toy!

Rich
