Anyone heard anything about this? I did a little searching last week and it sounds like not until 2008. I was thinking of adding LOTR to my Christmas list, but I've waited this long, I'd rather wait for the better format.

I did however, just signup for the Blockbuster online plan, which gives me a 2 week trial of 3 movies at a time. I put all 3 LOTR movies at the top of the list, so it looks like a LOTR marathon is coming up on Saturday

LOTR will not be in any HD format for awhile.

Peter Jackson will be doing the editing on it personally and he has other projects on the go right now.

As well, I think with such a high budget film the studios want to wait to see the outcome of the format war.

New Line is currently a supporter of HD-DVD. So when/if it does come out, it will be on HD-DVD and not Bluray (thank God)

The SD extended version video and sound are so good, I can't imagine needed or wanting HD. When I run these through the VP50, they look better than many of my HD dvds.

One gripe I'm having with HD is that they don't come in the director's or extended versions. At least not that I've found yet. After watching LOTR extended version, I'd hate to go to a theatrical version.

mdrew,

It has been confirmed that an HD LOTR set will appear sooner or later. Weta stated that they kept this in mind when releasing extended versions on DVD, they actually saved some footage for an HD release to give consumers incentive to buy.

When it will be released is something that no one knows unfortunatly.

I hear the "Peter Jackson whizzing on Tolkien's grave" footage is spectacular.
