OK, let's say, hypothetically, that you came into possession (OK you bought) a PS3-60GB Version (or two) today.

What would you do with it? Hypothetically, of course...
Posted By: Ken.C Re: What would you do with a PS3? - 12/07/06 09:05 PM
eBay, baby. eBay. Assuming prices are still up.
Posted By: nickbuol Re: What would you do with a PS3? - 12/07/06 09:18 PM
PS3 - 60 GB + Talladega Nights Blu-Ray = $900-1000
PS3 - 60 GB + Talladega Blu-Ray + Resistance: Fall of Man = $1000-1250

Price in store with tax:
PS3 - 60GB = $635
Talladega Blu-Ray = $25 Pre-Order
Resistance game = $60

So about a $720 "investment" you have the "potential" (nothing is ever guaranteed) for about $300-$500 profit.

Times two...

Hypothetically, of course....

Doesn't the Talladega come in the box?
Not that (hypothetically) one should open the box.

Take it to a convention of PS fanboys and smash it to bits with a sledgehammer right in front of them.

That's one expensive sledgehammer.

I guess that I should (hypothetically) look at the boxes closer. Glad I didn't just pre-order two without knowing. I just assumed that the movie was seperate because it doesn't come out for another 5 days.

E-bay both, then buy an Xbox360 and the HDDVD add on with the profits

IF I bought a different system, that is what I would get.

I almost had a Wii yesterday. Missed it by 5 minutes at Walmart... They got 9 in, and I was person 12.

It is not labelled anywhere on the box that the movie comes with it. Does anyone have any more information about this? I hear that it was for the "first 500,000 units." I wonder how I find out, knowing that most likely I am beyond that number significantly...
Wouldn't want to (hypothetically) false advertise.
Posted By: Ken.C Re: What would you do with a PS3? - 12/07/06 10:32 PM
And you were there, so you just happened to buy the 2 PS3s they had lying around...

Not a good sign for eBaying them.

Absolute worse case, I could return them for my hypothetical money back. Sounds like I should get my facts about the movie and get it out there ASAP...
Posted By: Ken.C Re: What would you do with a PS3? - 12/07/06 10:48 PM
I'm almost certain that at least at launch, the movie was a pack in with all of them, so as to showcase Blu-Ray.
Posted By: snakeyes Re: What would you do with a PS3? - 12/07/06 11:32 PM
I would sell it for a slight mark-up to another member on the board who is looking for one hypothetically a member named snakeyes. (seriously i would be interested). My wife has been trying to get one for me for our 10th wedding anniversary with no luck. she just waited in line from 4:00am to 8:30 (outside) for a wii for my daughter.
Posted By: SirQuack Re: What would you do with a PS3? - 12/07/06 11:53 PM
Nick, if you find some man, buy 2 and I'll pay you back. I've been looking everywhere in Des Moines and just miss them also. SE 14th Walmart had 8 yesterday that were gone by 10am, dang...
Posted By: HomeDad Re: What would you do with a PS3? - 12/08/06 12:18 AM
I've noticed on E-bay the prices of PS3 have been dropping a bit, there is a buy it now for the 20g sytem for 579.00. The Wii seems to be making a slight rise in price, 400.00 and up.
Posted By: oldskoolboarder Re: What would you do with a PS3? - 12/08/06 01:09 AM
Darn you!

I haven't been able to fine a PS3. Admittedly, I'd only want it for Blu Ray. I have a Wii and that's WAY more fun. I haven't put Zelda down. I have 2 other games (Trauma Center and Madden) which aren't even open yet...

Interesting article on PS3 vs XBOX for those that are looking at both. PS3 vs 360

Hey, wait until I put mine up on eBay before telling people how great the 360 is!

Oh, and for those wondering (probablly nobody besides me), about Talladega Nights Blu-Ray... Sometimes it is easy to overlook the obvious. Right on the front of the box, in the lower right hand corner, is a sticker stating that they (both) come with Talladega Nights inside....
Hypothetically, of course....

I stopped at Wally-World tonight and picked up two copies of Resistance: Fall of Man, which made the 19 year old sales guy (his name was Rocky) drool. He said that it was just awesome, and the graphics were unbelievable. I told him that I needed two, and he gave me a "you lucky bastard" look. He then commented on how they have so many XBox360s on the shelf, and they aren't as good of a seller, and I told him about how the "responsible" parent will buy their kid a 360 over the PS3 or Wii this year due to price, availability, game development, etc... I don't think that he believed me. Although, I do hear that the Wii is just good plain (and less expensive) fun. Not quite the graphics and processing beast as the other two, but fun just the same.

Well here's what I did, wnt home and hooked it up and played for about 12 hours. Then I watched Black Hawk Down and went to sleep. I am almost finished NFS Carbon, and im going to buy Fight Night Round 3 on Monday.I was going to sell on ebay but after all the fee's and shipping it's not worth it to make 100bucks.

Real Life - Sell it to make a profit.

Imaginary Land - Toss it in the fireplace and put the video on YouTube

Sony has worn me pretty raw lately so I'm not a big fan of the PS3. I'm a PC gamer to the core and consoles just don't do much for me anyway. I would like a 360 to be used as a MCE extender thou... at some point that will likely happen to me.

Ditto!

Keep it in the box for a year or two until the type of game that I'd want to play actually comes along. None of the launch titles interest me.

Or, give it to my cousins in their early 20's for Christmas. They'd think that I really was Santa Claus!

Yay, Kung Fu Hustle on Blu-ray was shipped today, so on Wednesday that's what I'll be doing with my PS3. Otherwise, it's just sitting there.

Great Movie, but doesn't make up for blu-ray

You are quite correct, but I'm willing to sell my soul to have it in high-definition. Now if they'd just release Sense and Sensibility like they were going to.
Posted By: nickbuol Re: What would you do with a PS3? - 12/14/06 03:04 PM
Well, the second PS3 is now sold.

Here is the lesson I learned.

Unless you are selling an expensive, hard to find item like this the first week that it is out, it isn't worth your time.

Here is a short (yeah right) glimpse of what happened.

I bought the two PS3 systems from Best Buy. Picked up the top PS3 game (Resistance:Fall of Man) to go with them. These units came with the Blu-Ray version of Talladega Nights.

I list both units on eBay, but seperated the start times by about 15 hours. I set them both for 3 day auctions.
I got no activity until the last hour of each listing (too many of them for sale on eBay).
The bidders we using bogus eBay accounts and driving the price up. New users with zero feedback were bidding on a bunch of the PS3's to drive prices up, so that the bogus bidder's real account could sell a PS3 with less competition.

Needless to say, my first attempt with each PS3 failed to complete. eBay won't refund my listing fees.
I will get a "credit" for part of the listing fees if I relist and it sells the second time around.

So I relist, lower the reserve price, lower the Buy It Now price (to something well under what legitimate sales are going for) and offered free shipping.
I set them for 1 day auctions seperated by 1 day each.
Still no action until the last hour.

Sold them both for just barely above the lowered reserve price.

I am glad that they are gone, but eBay and PayPal "raked me over the coals" on the fees.

It cost me about $15 per listing, another approx $24 for the "final value fee" when they sold, and then PayPal wanted $23 in transaction fees.

So if I do the math, per PS3 sold, it cost me $15 (first listing) + $15 (second listing) - $5 (relisting "refund") + $24 (final value fee) + $23 (PayPal fee) + $15 (shipping) = $87 each.
It cost me $698 per PS3, and they sold for $782 and $830.

So I actually LOST $3 on one, and I made a whole $45 on the other for a toal profit of $42 after a week of headaches...

The other amazing thing is that PayPal is owned by eBay, so their high fees startling.

At least they are sold. But if I take my $42 "profit" and split it up amongst the amount of time to set up the auctions, to drive to get the PS3's, games, and to ship them out, plus the time spent just talking about it here, fighting eBay to get full refunds on the original listing fees, etc, I don't think that $42 covers my hours of effort.

Like I said, lesson learned...

Should have donated them to Child's Play. Speaking of which... it is a great charity, I donate books each year to the IWK Children's Health Centre in Nova Scotia (at the time, the only Canadian hospital NOT in Toronto - I figure The Big Smoke gets enough press, there is now also a hospital in BC).

Anyway, it's pretty easy, the hospitals create wishlists for the kids on Amazon, you buy, Amazon ships to the hospital... you don't get a tax receipt, but that keeps costs down. So far this year I think they're up over $500,000 in donations.

If I could fork out the $1400 to donate them, I would have. That sounds like a cool charity. Kids need to laugh, smile, and have fun, even when it seems that everything is stacked against them.

Its not quite the same console/charity, but I just donated a new Gamecube to one of the toy donation(United Way) places here at a mall. Hope it gets put to good use, wish I had read this first.
Posted By: BrenR Re: What would you do with a PS3? - 12/15/06 07:45 AM
United Way is a great cause as well... no sweat for it not being to Tycho and Gabe's "cool" charity.

Good on ya for that! *applauds*

Ah, not so. Sell the other one on eBay and still make a profit. Although the look on little Johnny Fanboy's face when the hammer hits the plastic would be worth a loss.
