Dance Dance Revolution - 01/21/08 12:17 AM

So in the last couple of weeks I started playing Dance Dance Revolution again (DDR Universe and DDR Universe 2 for the Xbox 360) for exercise, as I don't really get my heart rate up... at all ever. I was getting so lethargic. I was long overdue for some form of exercise. It's actually working out really well. I know that as far as rhythm games go, DDR is pretty much dead, with Guitar Hero and Rock Band taking all of the business, but with my natural lack of rhythm, I would have to get some benefit from playing, so DDR it is.

I played semi-regularly on my original Xbox. I can already tell that the same level of mastery is all I can hope for, especially on the crappy cheap pads that come with the games. I keep hoping Red Octane will release a new version of their foam pad that will work with the 360, but no dice so far. They're killing me, they really are. If anyone knows of another brand that's worth buying that works with the 360, let me know.

I've already lost several pounds, with some tightening in KEY AREAS, and along with my spastic arm exercises in between songs, it's made a noticeable improvement in my appearance. Like, I'm getting a lot more girls saying hi and looking at me at work. It could just be a coincidence, but I believe it's my video game hotness drawing their stares.

So consider this another testimonial for the effectiveness of video games as a workout. \:\) For people who may not be able to find the motivation to exercise in other ways, you may try it in the form of a game like this. I have trouble finding other activities that I'll do. They're usually too public for my liking, so this works for me.

All you have to do now is come up with a catchy marketing name, and you could have a best seller. Kind of like Tei Bo, of Hip Hop Abs, or Sweating to the Oldies..... Oh wait, scratch the last one....

Congrats on the weight loss. DDR really is good for your cardio. We used to play it at home all of the time about 2 years ago and really should get them back out for some winter excersize. I know that I could use it.

Just wait till Wii Fit is released this year, then you can add that to your regime.

Yeah, you could warm up with some Wii Fit, then move into the cardio with DDR, slow it back down with some more Wii Fit, and then cool off to Guitar Hero or Rock Band...

We'd all be in shape in no time...

\:\) I haven't really read much about Wii Fit. Is it supposed to be worthwhile?

I've set a minimum of a half hour every morning for DDR during the week and an hour a day on weekends. I've been exceeding that minimum goal every day, but I think if I just get my heart rate up that much, I should be fine. Back when I first played it, I would do 3 or 4 hours continuous on some weekends. I could definitely feel it.

Heart rate in the 'zone' for a min of 30 minutes a day not just activity for 30 min. So 10-15 minutes of warm up and then the same for cool down, you are now up to 45 minutes or so a day.

But to me any activity is better than sitting whether or not the heart rate reaches optimum levels or not.

All right, so I was at my heaviest right before starting up DDR again, and I was 167 or 168 lbs. I'm now down to 152, so 15 lbs is pretty good for just adding DDR to my day. I didn't change my diet, but I should really work on that, too. The last time I lost this much weight, it was the other way. I changed my diet but not my exercise regimen. I'm still not where I'd like to be as far as tone, but I've definitely improved, and I certainly feel better. Good stuff.

Maybe you can be the next spokesperson for DDR, like Jared for Subway. Then maybe you can market your own exercise video. The start of your own marketing empire!

Ha ha, nah. A lot of people have lost way more weight, and are much better at the game. Free bad dancing for life is a nice perk, though.

Free bad dancing for life is a nice perk, though.

For some of us, that's a natural talent.

Anyone know when Lap Dance Revolution will be released? It's a game for women, and you can include yourself in the box as the mat.

The deluxe edition comes with the annoying announcer guy.
