hello all. I know that this has been belaboured to death, but I need some sound (lol) advise here.

I'm considering (actually waiting for executive approval - yes da wives) purchasing a H/T setup consisting of some H/K components and Axiom speakers. Because the H/K's will handle 7.1, I would like to purchase some QS4's for the rears (M22's for the fronts, VP100 or 150 centre, EP175 sub). The room where everything will be setup is 11x16, cathederal ceiling with an opening into another room off to the right. As the house is now being built, I want to start the wiring while I can. I would like to mount the 2 rear spreakers on the back wall of the room - approximately 9' high and 3' behind the couch. I would then like to mount the rear surrounds on the sides of the cathederal ceiling, angled downward, but am unsure as to how far away they should be from the rears.

Also, because the placement of these speakers will be at least 10' away from the amp, what would be the best gauge wire to use.

Any info would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Allan, if the rear surrounds will be about 3 feet behind the couch, the side surrounds should be a foot or two in front of the couch, but this isn't really a critical measurement.

So far as the gauge of the speaker wire, there's nothing special about the 10' distance you mention, although at that distance even 18ga would be more than enough. If you're actually thinking of a run of possibly 30 feet to rear surround QS4s, then 16ga would be fine. The wiretablein this article shows what you need.

Allan, I envy you having a chance to in-wall wire everything from scratch! You may want to download and look through the Home Theater Installation Guide at Crutchfield.com. This booklet seems to contain many bits of useful infomation for in-wall wiring, besides other things.

Cheers!

sry, meant to say alittle more then just that. I printed off the link that you sent me. Some great advise. Nice to know that I can use the cheaper wire and not notice any difference in the sound.

thx very much for the site. Some great information in there. Being that i'm looking at a 7.1 system, I guess I should run a wire for the centre rear as well ???

Sushi, thanks for the Crutchfield link, it was very interesting...

I'm setting up my first whole-house audio from one receiver. I purchased a speaker selector and was planning to hook it up to the "B" speaker outputs to power the speakers on various rooms, and keep the "A" speaker output for the home theater speakers.

I'm assuming this can be done as long as I don't select the "AB" speaker output, am I correct on this? Is there normally a difference between the A & B outputs?

Thanks!
