Hey guys, I have a Sharp Aquos LC37D43U. This morning I turned it on and I got a brief picture (a millisecond maybe) then nothing but sound. I tried a dvd and again nothing but sound, no picture. I unplugged it for the day then rebooted it and it's still the same.

When I asked my daughter she said that last night she was watching tv and the picture just went out. She turned it off and back on and she got the same, no picture.

Any ideas?
Posted By: jakewash Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/20/08 11:00 PM
Silly question, the input wasn't mistakenly changed? If not take it to the nearest repair shop.
Posted By: SirQuack Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/20/08 11:04 PM
How loud are you listening? How big is your room? Did you calibrate the TV? Do you have an SPL meter?

OK seriously, sorry... no ideas Rick, I was going to say unplug it for awhile...hope you figure it out man.

Hello wid,

How old is the t.v?
Can you get any of the on-screen menus to appear?

It seems the backlight on your LCD might need to be replaced?

Is the t.v covered by warrenty?

Good luck

When I was a kid I never admitted to my parents when I broke things either \:\) .

I did a search for you and found others with the same problem and asking for help but no responses other than contacting Sharp. I had to call them about my Aquos and they were pretty good to deal with.

Good luck
Posted By: Wid Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/20/08 11:47 PM

I bought the tv in March of 06. My wife insisted on an extended warranty so we should be covered. I am just curious if anyone had any other ideas.

I can't get to the menu at all, it won't bring up anything on the panel.

The inputs are ok or there would be no sound. No?
Posted By: Ya_basta Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/20/08 11:56 PM
When you say you rebooted it, does that mean you tried "system reset"?
Posted By: Ya_basta Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/21/08 12:09 AM
One other thing to check. On my Aquos remote there is a button that says "audio only", if it's on your remote also, maybe it accidentally got pushed and that's why there's no picture.
Posted By: Wid Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/21/08 12:11 AM

I tried what I found on line as a system reset.

I found this "The problem is most likely the the screws are loose on the inverter boards. The screws must be tighted as they provide the ground to the inverter bds. The inverter boards are undet the shields on both sides of the unit after pulling the back cover. One way to make sure that you are losing back lights and not video is when your picture goes black, shine a flash light on the screen at an angle and will see the video is still there. This mean the back lights are out. If you do not see the video it may be another problem"

I did the flashlight trick and can see video so I think it might be the back light problem.

The spec'd backlight life for that particular LCD is 60,000 hours. I would guess your backlight has failed and will need to be replaced. It fits the symptoms.
Posted By: MarkSJohnson Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/21/08 12:20 AM
I'm late to the party, but that test with that flashlight ia what i would have recommended because it's the best for determining if the backlight is out!

Sorry to hear about the TV troubles Rick. I guess if you haven't been able to find a solution at least you have the extended warranty to fall back on thanks to the spouse. Now you might need to get her a diamond for X-mas. ;\)

Rick, try unplugging it from the outlet and wait 5 minutes. My old Sony CRT did this sometimes. I'd hear the "bong" as the degausser would fire up, but the picture would remain nonexistant.

Unplugging it reset the circuit board, or something-or-other in there, and it came back to life like a champ after a brief wait.
Posted By: Wid Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/21/08 02:09 AM

I've done that more than a few times Sean, it didn't work.

Did you try the old stand by, and whack the TV with the palm of your hand?

No but I thought about shooting the son of a ***** . Then I thought that might void the warranty.

Good reason to get out the pistol for some close range action. \:D \:o

Oh yeah, it's been a while. I did get to shoot a buddies shot gun dialing it in for shotgun (deer) season. That was fun.
Posted By: merchman Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/21/08 02:23 AM
Then claim the tv somehow got lead poisoning. Is that covered?
Posted By: Wid Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/21/08 02:28 AM

I wish. Though not a hunter myself I sure do like shooting those deer slugs.

This Saturday is the start of Wisconsin's gun deer season. Can't wait to sit in the brutal cold. Hopefully it won't take long for one to walk out and say, "shoot me before I freeze to death!"

Some smoked hind quarter would work for me

I've looked into doing that but I read wild game is pretty tricky to smoke as it is so lean. I did have venison chili the other night, that was good.

Once I tried to smoke some rabbit and it turned out less than stellar.

It's nice that, for a change, his question actually got answered before the thread seriously derailed. Why does every thread here end with smoked meat??????

Speaking of which, it's Friday so it's 'go out to eat at lunch and order something totally unhealthy' day.

Talking about smoked meat here are some ribs I made last weekend \:D

And in other news, an Illinois man was arrested yesterday for....is this right, Julie?.... taking pictures of his own meat...... Well, that's what it says... Evidently the man has been caught before. He has a thing for...well... photographing his meat. He does it all the time. His neighbors say that they've taken to pulling their children inside when the man starts grilling and smoking, knowing that the camera will soon show itself and indeed, he'll soon be taking pictures of his meat. Right there on the Veranda, huh Julie? Well, that's what it says......

This exact same thing happened to my laptop about two months ago. The display was still there (as tested with a flashlight) but no backlighting at all. I would assume the technology is exactly the same between your LCD TV and a laptop LCD monitor. If that's the case, there's a part called an LCD inverter that may have just died. That's what the PC repair ticket indicated on my laptop, anyway.

In my case, the LCD would start working again after a couple of hours. But then it would wink out again as the LCD got hot.

I suspect you'll need to call for a warranty repair.

Well the ol boy was here for 30 seconds and said the tv needs a main module (circuit board) I asked about the back light and he said that wasn't the problem..............hmmmmmmm. From what I read and from here I would had bet it was.
Posted By: Ken.C Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/21/08 09:30 PM
Well, it could still be that the board is controlling the backlight. You said it comes on briefly, right?
Posted By: EFalardeau Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/21/08 09:31 PM
He is coming back with a "main module"?
Posted By: Wid Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/21/08 09:40 PM
Yeah it comes on for a millisecond then goes blank. He has to order the part and said it will 10 days or so. No cost to us as we have the extended warranty .

On thing that pissed me off was he put his metal clip board down on my turntable I not so politely told him to take it off.
Posted By: EFalardeau Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/21/08 09:48 PM
That's really annoying. Sounds like you had the "extended wait" warranty. Did you pay the extended warranty to your local dealer? If it is local dealer, I would be mad that he is not keeping stock for the surcharge they make you pay.
Posted By: BlueJays1 Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/21/08 10:18 PM
At least this problem is not going to cost you any money. These technicians are not cheap. I would imagine the cost for the service call alone (just for the diagnosis) would be around $100, plus add on any parts (probably marked up) and labour.

 Originally Posted By: Dr.House

The "Primary" module is on us... Wait until the "Secondary" module fails...
Posted By: Wid Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/22/08 02:21 AM

The warranty is good until 3/10 so at least I'm good til then. After that it becomes target practice.
Posted By: myrison Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/22/08 04:22 PM
I had the board in my Panasonic RPTV go out too. Not under warranty, but I called and complained to Panasonic and they split the cost with me. It was a pleasant surprise. Cost me 200 instead of 4.

Posted By: BlueJays1 Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/23/08 01:29 PM
How did the technician diagnose the t.v? Did he hook up any diagnostic tools to the back of the t.v or did he just turn it on and say "blah blah you need the main module fixed"?
Posted By: Wid Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/23/08 02:56 PM

He came in turned the tv on and proceeded to tell me it need a main module. I really did expect some sort of diagnostic tool to be used. Believe me I wasn't very impressed with the clown.
Posted By: RickF Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/23/08 03:09 PM
Whenever our 1st generation Sony plasma took a trip south the tech turned it on for a minute and immediately recommended a new TV (part of our extended warranty agreement) ... I didn't argue.

Rick maybe the guy has seen sooo many of these Sharp LCD TVs do this he knows beforehand what the issue is prior to turning the TV on?

I really wouldn't doubt that.
Posted By: BlueJays1 Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/23/08 03:18 PM
That guy is a clown. I would expect him to go through some sort of protocol on your t.v. I have an input on the back of my LCD for the tech. If the t.v ever needed to be serviced I would expect him to use it.

Hey, the guy might be that good, however if there are multiple things wrong with the television how would he know without doing some sort of test.

Good news, atleast you are covered and it will not cost you anything:). Imagine paying for a service call from that tech and all he did was turn on the t.v!
Posted By: Wid Re: Sharp tv troubles - 11/23/08 03:25 PM

No kidding, I wouldn't be very happy to pay a service call for that. If not for the service plan this Sharp might have been tossed in the trash by now.

I just got off the phone with GE, they hold the service contract, and now they are telling me they might replace the tv if they can't find a part. Posted By: Wid Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 01:28 AM

I finally got an answer to the tv problem today. They approved a replacement for it. I went out looking and for the amount that GE allows I can go with a real nice 37 inch Sony which is $936 or I can get a 42 inch Samsung plasma. Then they also had a Samsung 50 inch plasma that if I were to take I would need to put in $123.67 on top of the credit given. I'm leaning towards the 50" as of now. I want to get this done so as possible so I would appreciate some opinions right away.

IMO the 50" plasam has the lead. What say ya'll?

Posted By: SRoode Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 01:47 AM
Best price on the net is $959 (from a reputable source like Amazon):

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-PN50A450-5...N%3DB0015AV3XM#

It's 720p, not 1080p. Overall, it seems to have very nice reviews.
Posted By: St_PatGuy Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 01:53 AM
Yeah, it seems pretty good. One review I came across mentioned the tv would play the new 3D Blu-ray movies.

Dude, you gotta get it now, Rick!
Posted By: Wid Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 01:59 AM

It will be nice just to have something that works \:\) The 1080P isn't all that important to me. The one that broke was 720P and I thought it looked great. My dvd player is the Toshiba hd player that I use to upscale. I don't do video games either.

I sit 11 feet away, this won't be to big? I think not but the wife has reservations although she said it's my call.

Get the big 50 incher Rick. You know you want it. Then I'll have a good excuse to road trip south to watch the Superbowl on that bad boy. ;\) By the way, glad to hear there has been some resolution to your television nightmare. Enjoy what ever set you choose.

Then why are you still mad?

Got to change that, thanks.

Come on down Ed.

Happy once again \:\)

Congrats, Rick. Looks like it all worked out.
Posted By: Wid Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 03:12 AM

Thanks Mark, I'm sure glad the wife insisted on the extended warranty. That's probably the best $120 I have ever spent.

Rick, if you have a Costco around you, I just got a Panasonic 46" Plasma 1080p for $949, and Costco extends the warranty for 2 years automatically. If not drive over here to Des Moines and I'll go with you to get one. The picture is the best I've seen. If you read the reviews, consumer reports, etc. Panny's are at the top. Samsung was a close second for me, but the Panny's 460hz subfield, picture, and price clinched the deal.

The same TV at Sears, Best Buy, Onecall, etc. under a different part number is 1200-1300...

The picture is killer over the air in high def...46" is huge in our 15 x 20 living room.

Rick, definitely go bigger, I'm about 9 feet away from our 60 inch, my first thoughts were Jeez that thing is huge, But after a couple movies the whole familily is happy we went with the bigger set.

Randy, I would but it is an in store credit as far as I can tell. The store is billing GE for the purchase, not me. With what they carry this Sammy seems like the best deal imo.

Will do Michael, will do.

Randy makes a good point. Panasonic plasmas are tough to beat. The 46" 1080p is a very nice unit. If you want at least 50", go for the 720p Panasonic.

Bestbuy has it for $999.00.

Costco has the same tv(different model number) in their store for a similar price.

Oops you posted while I was replying. What store did you purchase the Sharp from?
Posted By: Wid Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 03:49 AM

The store was Grants.
Posted By: MarkSJohnson Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 12:10 PM
Man, I remember a chain called Grants from when I was a kid 40 years ago.... I thought the chain went out. Wonder if your store was part of the same chain? Hadn't heard that name in a while!

(Don't mind the old guy mumbling to himself in the corner...)

Carry on...carry on....
Posted By: Wid Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 01:28 PM

It could be Mark, it is a chain store here in IL I think the 6 stores or so.
Posted By: RickF Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 01:52 PM
I'm late for the 'telling you what TV to buy' party but you'll come to really like the 50" set ... in due time you'll be wanting a larger set. \:\)

Congrats old man!
Posted By: MarkSJohnson Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 01:55 PM
This is the chain I went to as a kid.... probably not the same!

And, more on topic, I sit ~8.5' feet away from a 46" and don't find it too big at all. It's amazing how something that seems too big initially seems perfect after a month!

Shut up, Peter.

And the rest of you, too.
Posted By: RickF Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 02:08 PM
I remember that Grant's chain of stores, 'been a while. We sit 12' from our 73" and while watching TV I find myself more and more often giving the installer (me!) a gold star and a several cold Heineken's for pre-wiring our in-wall runs for a front projector.
Posted By: Wid Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 02:22 PM
Grants, here is the store I'm talking about.
Posted By: Ya_basta Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 03:14 PM
Rick, what 73 in. TV do you have?
Posted By: myrison Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 03:22 PM
Rick - just a very late reply to say congrats on getting the issue resolved. Better late (and free) than never!

Cam, it's a Mitsubishi WD-73727, we've had it for over three years and are happy with it so far. Our next one will be a front projector though.

I went and paid the difference which ended up being even less. They wanted to charge me for delivery so I told them to just cut me a check and I'll go elsewhere. Sears.com has the 450 on sale for $899 I told them. They took the delivery charge off and another $15. I ended up paying $107 which ended up being the difference.

Delivery is going to be Friday. I could have got it tomorrow but being it's Christmas eve I opted for Friday.
Posted By: doormat Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 06:56 PM
Ha! By trying to snow you for the extra delivery they wound up losing an extra $15!

Posted By: Wid Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 07:10 PM

If it wasn't for the delivery charge I wouldn't have said anything as I thought it was a fair deal. All they did was piss me off again \:\)
Posted By: SirQuack Re: Sharp tv troubles - 12/23/08 07:17 PM
should have cut the check and got a panny.
