Just wondering if anyone out there plays disc golf?

Tulsa is a great town for it as I have 15 courses within 20 miles form my house.

Sure. What else are you going to do in Tulsa. ;\)

I've only played a couple times, but I enjoyed it. I could easily get into it if I had the time.

Yeah, I have played off and on for the last 5 years or so... there was about a 1.5 to 2 year stretch where I didn't really play at all though.

Getting back into it now... have been playing 2-3 times per week with a friend of mine and am enjoying it. We really only play about 6 courses or so... the other ones are not well maintained, cost money, or are only 9 holes instead of 18.

I picked it up in the 1990s as a medical student in Augusta, GA. I haven't played too much lately, but I've got a bag of about 15 discs that's calling my name. I have figured out the hyzer factor pretty well and can drive and putt pretty accurately. It's my midrange game (approaches) that needs the most work. I never settled on a favorite disc for that. Everyone seems to love the Roc, but for me, it hasn't done any magic.

I just moved back to Augusta, which has many excellent courses and is the home of the PDGA. Once I got to see some of the greats play in a championship at Pendleton King Park.

When I left town in 2001, there were three courses. Now there are seven, and it looks like a couple of the new ones are pretty hot stuff: Headrick and Warner. Guess I'll be checking them out pretty soon!

This is probably one of my favorites in Tulsa:

I went to Pendleton King Park - just a few miles from my house - the other day and threw a 65. Par is 56, so a 9 handicap is not too bad for being away from the game for a year or two. I hope to get out more and see what I can do once I've practiced/played for a while. I'm sure I can get closer to par now that I've seen the layout of the course.

Why......Back in the day.....'70's we had to make up our own courses. We played all the time but you made the course up as you went. As High School students we would meet on Wake Forest Campus and play the campus. "See that big tree - third from the left side of the library? Ok.....Par 4" Everyone agrees and off you go. We also only had the one Professional Frisbee 133 grams. We had a blast.

I could make do with two discs - driver, putter - and get almost as good a score. But it's nice to have the extras for that perfect spin. Most disc golf discs are in the 170 g range or the 150 g range. I prefer the heavier ones for stability.

I was on the Wake campus once - visited a college buddy who was doing law school there in the early 90s. At the time, I was working at ECU in Greenville.

I'm sad to say that I grew up rooting for Dook. Now I like all the NC schools about the same, which must sound weird to a North Carolinian.

As for today's disc's, I often pick them up in stores and think "man, if we had had these....." If I had someone to play with up here, I would do it. We do have at lease one official course.

ECU.....Party On, Dude.....as for DOOK - I went to Carolina....nuff said.

I almost went to Duke. I got more scholarship money from and had a nicer campus visit to Notre Dame, so there ya go.

A couple of years ago, I saw ND lose a close football game at Carolina. They had good barbecue at the stadium, though, so it wasn't a total loss. And Franklin St was fun.

For those of you unfamiliar with disc golf, here's a mind-boggling table of the offerings from Innova, one of the big companies. Bear in mind that there are several other companies with their own product lines. OTOH, you can get by very, very well with just two or three discs as you start up.

In my bag you will find:

Drivers: Champion (rainbow) Leopard (my go-to disc), Eagle (multiple), Cheetah, Gazelle, Firebird, Archangel (though I'm not strong/skilled enough to really achieve the full potential of those last two)
Midrange: Roc, Stingray
Putt/Approach: Birdie (go-to), Aviar, Aero, Rhyno

So, that's what those basket looking things in the parks are for. I thought they were squirrel feeders.

I've got seven or eight discs and a course that is about three miles from my house but it has been several years since I played. I never really got into it much. I enjoyed regular golf much more but that got to be too expensive, time consuming, and frustrating.

Yeah, the cost comparison is an easy win for disc golf (vs "ball" golf). For $30 or less, you can get three discs that'll last for months or years, depending on how many trees you hit. Oh, and whether or not you throw them into a lake. No greens fees. No special clothes or shoes required.

I've been playing off and on for 15+ years, and haven't put any money into equipment for years. Never lost a disc until last weekend. I think it went down a sewer drain. After it cleared that hill, I lost sight of it and it was nowhere to be found. I was bummed out, because it was my Stingray, my only anhyzer disc. Think that one has to be replaced. Hey, my birthday is coming up...

JP, you've peaked my interest enough to find some basic information on it!

2 years ago when we won the NCAA Basketball Championship, my daughter called me up the next day and said "DAD! I almost got trampled on Franklin last night! \:D " She was at a house near Franklin and she and her friends sprinted to Franklin. They were among the first to arrive. The crowds continued to pour in until in the middle of the street, you couldn't move. She tripped and fell and people immediately begin stepping on her. Her roommate was screaming at people and trying to help her up but almost went down herself. Just when she was starting to panic, she said these 2 huge hands picked her up from behind. Turned out to be a guy from the football team that was in one of her classes. He calmed her down and said "I'm gonna get you to the side". He kept her in front of him and got her and her roomie to the periphery where she stayed for the remainder of the "celebration". She told me the story like it was "cool". As a dad, it just scared the crap out of me. Apparently the crowds were similar to the ones my brother experienced when the Heels won in '83.

Quite a story, inert gas man!

Mark - Cool! If/when we meet up, I'll give you some pointers. I think you'll find that when you go out to a course, disc golfers are very accommodating to n00bs. Enjoy!

Some people may think you are referring to something other than his handle.

The kids just earned a new Wii game yesterday: Wii Sports Resort. I noticed that is has disc golf on it. Now I can play in my living room and avoid that fresh air. \:\)

Ha ha, yes, thank goodness for video games. Something has to protect us from the harsh elements (AKA sunshine and a cool breeze).
Posted By: medic8r Re: Any one out there play disc golf? - 05/10/10 01:28 PM
I went out again yesterday, braving the sunshine and cool breeze, and threw a 70 at the same course. My putting killed me. I had several gimmes that lipped out. And I lost another disc in the woods. The saving grace was making a birdie on 17 with a good drive and sinking a 30 foot putt for a 2 on a par 3 hole.

Or Odd Job hat golf.

Hey, I could use that hat for getting through the rough.

Next time, I'll practice my sidearm delivery in the fields, not the woods.
