i would like to know if anyone can recommend groups and/or albums of good electronic music in the styles of Pink Floyd and Kraftwerk,
preferably those that have melodies and are not repetitive like club dance music.

I used to like The Art of Noise quite a bit.... but I'm not sure that's what you're looking for or not...

Oooops- It seems most of their good stuff is out of print.

Never mind!

I’ve found that using the “last.fm” “Similar Artists” search can sometimes be useful in finding bands.

thanks all, specially grunt for his link, which will be very useful.

Orbital is pretty good. Definitely not like pink floyd, and maybe too repetitive for your taste but listen to some of their samples from amazon.

Well, I could definitely recommend the Orb since they just released and album with David Gilmour!

But for the best that modern electronic has to offer, here's a list of some of the best artists that use electronics and are very progressive musically:

Squarepusher
Aphex Twin
Amon Tobin
Luke Vibert
Mouse On Mars
Mike Paradinas
The Orb
Simon Begg

And while this group is not primarily electronic, they are heavily influenced by electronics.

And they are pretty fantastic!

Massive Attack.

Art Of Noise are incredible! Big thumbs up for that. They were very ahead of their time.

I forgot to mention Boards Of Canada. I bet you would really dig their stuff.

And of course, Thomas Dolby. Pure genius!

And other old school electronic based artist are Front 242, Brian Eno (duh!) and Cabaret Voltaire.

I only like the good stuff. I hate boring techno/rave crap.

So stay far away from Deadmau5! sick

Oh, and I left out one of the most innovative and futuristic duo that are making some of the most interesting electronic are Autechre.

Here's a video directed by Chris Cunningham (a very amazing director)

Also check out his videos for Aphex Twin:

And another Chris Cunningham video for Squarepusher. Very cool.

JB, you might want to check out the Scottish band Boards of Canada.

Jean Michel Jarre
Vangelis
Tangerine Dream
Mike Oldfield

These have some stuff that is not too clubby/dancy:
Moby
LCD Soundsystem

I like Mike Oldfield but a lot of people seemed unhappy with the remasters.

I will 3rd this recommendation highly.

Few examples to see if they interest you:

Left Side Drive
Dayvan Cowboy (give it a bit to get going, very excellent toon)
Everything you do is a ballon (this one will give you lots of LFE)
Roygbiv

This is my new favorite thread since "Electronic" is my fav genre...

I wanted to share some examples of Art of Noise as I think they are the best band that nobody has heard of.

Moments in Love (one of the greatest songs ever made)

Peter Gunn Theme (fun remake)

Dragnet 88 (they did this for the Dan Aykroyd remake)

Robinson Crusoe

Nearly all of their songs are very layered so they take a little while to build up from the start. But I think that's a large part of why I love em so much.

Shiny Toy Guns is another good choice.

I also like ELP's version, I guess that could also qualify as "electronic music".

Another completely awesome band is Underworld.

Few good examples:

Rez / Cowgirl (live)
Sola Sistim
Dark and Long

You have no idea how much the internet sucks shit in Canada!
Posted By: Adrian Re: Electronic Music - 03/06/11 01:37 PM
Fred, grooveshark is NOT blocked here.
Posted By: grunt Re: Electronic Music - 03/06/11 10:46 PM
It might be that individual ISPs are blocking it.

Interesting note I just did a Google search “is grooveshark blocked in Canada” and this thread was on the first page of the Google hits.

BTW not blocked here in AZ

i've found some eccentric electronic music that is worth a good listen:La Cherga - Fake No More
a critic can be read here for those interested:
http://blogcritics.org/music/article/music-review-la-cherga-fake-no/

i'm also getting some music by Kitaro, Stockhausen, Autechre, Jean Michel Jarre, Klaus Schulze, Kraftwerk, and a few others.

thanks for all the suggestions and keep them coming (as long as they're good ones, of course).
Posted By: bridgman Re: Electronic Music - 03/07/11 07:04 AM
OK, you've got Klaus Schulze. That was going to be the first on my list. Here are a few others I haven't seen mentioned yet...

Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark (OMD)

Schicke Fuhrs Froehling (start with first album)

Triumvirat (Illusions on a Double Dimple may be my favorite album of all time)

Rick Wakeman (maybe start with White Rock or Six Wives of Henry VIII)

Alan Parsons Project

ELP was mentioned but make sure you listen to Brain Salad Surgery (the album not the song)

FM was mentioned in a couple of other threads here, but look at Nash the Slash's solo work as well (maybe start with "And You Thought You Were Normal"

Crystal Machine (Tim Blake)

I feel like I'm missing some good examples, but maybe they'll come to me later.

OK, I remember what was nagging at me. In your first post you mentioned Pink Floyd and electronic music together, but I tend to think of Pink Floyd as more of a regular 4-piece band, albeit a really creative and unusual one... and so "similar" bands might be more along the lines of King Crimson, Hawkwind or maybe even Nektar.

Was there any particular Pink Floyd album that you were thinking about when you made your original post ?
Posted By: J. B. Re: Electronic Music - 03/07/11 12:00 PM
I've had some Pink Floyd albums for quite a long time: Dark Side...
and Wish you were Here and The Wall; and i don't intend to buy more of those.
