There was a recent post having to do with how people treat their CDs/CD trays. Anyone have any other "unspoken rules" or pet peeves that realyl annoy you?
One of my biggest is that I can't stand to see a piece of electronic equipment that still has the protective plastic coating on it (you know, the stuff you're supposed to peel off when you unpack it). I absolutely cannot resist peeling it off myself. It's really bad when the platic has already started to come off by itself. ~~SHUDDER~~
So if you're one of those who likes to keep the plastic film ON, don't invite me over.
1) pushing the cd tray in, rather than pressing "close"
2) that protective film
3) watching tv/dvd with all the lights on
4) background noise while watching dvd (a/c, fans, etc)
5) throwing in a dvd and hitting play without even checking the setup features
6) watching tv/dvd in stereo when it's 5.1 encoded
7) finding one cd in another cd's case

Not putting the DVDs back in their box and back on the shelf when you're done watching them...

Many of your issues are similar to mine. I ALWAYS check the setup options. I hate how choices are not always clear, like how many DVDs hide the DTS/Dolby soundtrack choice or even 5.1 vs. stereo under "Languages". Sheesh!
I align my CDs and DVDs so the tops are pointed towards the top of the case. I can't stand the plastic stuff either, but I don't indiscriminately tear it off of other people's stuff.. Ahem!
I can't stand bad audio systems. The poeple at my work like playing the hold music (a bunch of MP3s) through their phones when not on hold. Drives me buggy, even when it's something I like! (this is rare, but there's some Sting in there, at least).
However, I'm afraid I'm guilty of half the stuff that Spiffnme hates...
Finding a CD in the wrong case drives me freaking insane. So does looking for the CD case only to find that the empty case has been put back in its place on the shelf, empty. So does finding two CDs stuck in one case. Or finding a stack of my CDs not in any case at all.
Oh...thought of another one. I have my DVD's and CD's in alphabetical order. I really don't like it when someone pulls one out, and then puts it back where it doesn't belong.

No standard format for dvd's with regard to audio..
A bit off subject, but finding photo gear with the little gold 'Passed' sticker still attached ! sheeeesh, on that one.. (This is done (or not done?) by the same people afraid to remove the labels off their mattress or pillow)
Oh yeah, let's not forget this one !! Re-releasing a dvd in an upgraded version just a month or so after the 1st copy.. And doing this more than once or twice !!! Original, followed by directors cut, followed by the Special Edition, followed by the Extra Special micro bit sound super duper edition !!???!!
Dang.. Now ya got me all worked up again.. hahaha

my no 1 has to be the same as mikey's, but to add to that that, take a cd out of the player and then put it on the shelf/table/whatever playing side down! That kills me.

How about all the effort it takes to get *in* to a new DVD? I swear, you need to set aside 10 minutes while the popcorn's popping just to get all those security tapes off.
Another pet peeve - sorry, Canada - is that our DVDs have French and English titles on the spines. I mean really, would it be so hard to make individual covers in Canada? By the time you're able to get close enough to read

One more - when a DVD advertises 'Special Features' and it is only one - the trailer. Thanks. Good effort.
Ooh, yeah, I forgot about those. CD cases with that stupid plastic tape on the top are also really, really bad (I've got to open tons of those things for my clients... gah). I like they way they shrink wrap it and THEN tape the top shut! Just in case a theif has a portable shrinkwrap machine!

You've got to be anal about something else before you're anal about audio. It's an unspoken rule.
All of us started out with "music reproduction systems" that are well below our current standards, right? If we all refused to listen to music on anything less than our current systems, where would we be?
My first system was a Fisher-Price plastic record player -- which worked like a music box.
Mine was an all-in-one stereo turntable/amp/speakers (don't remember the brand; perhaps JVC), which my father bought me when I was in the 3rd or 4th grade (circa 1970). I vividly remember that I would sneak in to my father's den and secretly play his box-set LPs of Beethoven Symphonies 1~9 (Karajan/BPO). I was strictly forbidden to touch those LPs, and of course, that further motivated the young boy to listen to them.
Anyway, that was how I was introduced to orchestral music, to which I have been hooked ever since. Perhaps I should thank my father to disallow those LPs.
1. Dust (of any kind - on any of my electronic equipment, namely computer and sound system)
2. DUST!!!!!
3. When someone touches and moves any of my speakers... I have spent enough time with a ruler string to get my speakers EXACTLY where I want them for someone to just move them like that.
4. People who NEED to touch my drivers. Why must they even touch them? Does that make them feel complete? BAH!!
5. People who think I am wierd for listening to music in stereo when I have an "8.1" ch reciever (6.1 + 2xFront FX chans).
6. People who "adjust" my stereo... (need I say more?)
7. People who eat during a movie I play with my system (I don't mind if it's at their place - just not at mine.)
I have many, MANY more; but you all get the picture.
DUST! DUST! DUST! I'm with you on that DJ. I have an Ionic Breeze (and others through out the house) near the entrance of my theater that helps, but I dust my theater room everyday.
Ionic Breezes really work well? I never would have thought that fanless operation could be good. I use a hepa filter - lol, but I still get bad crud.
Heh, I almost forgot my biggest pet peeve - PEOPLE WHO THING BIG BASS AND A LOT OF TREBLE IS GOOD AUDIO! I can't stand it when people come over, listen to my system, and then they are like, "its ok, but you really need more bass." If I wanted bass, I could turn up my 15" Eminence LF Magnum, but I have everything tuned as I would want it. Then when I go see their system, it's just some cerwin vega towers with powered "subs" built in that can barely do under 30 Hz audibly.
Ignorance, when it comes to audio, truly is bliss.
Last night as I was walking back home from a neighborhood restaurant, one of those "farting" cars drove by. You know the ones with the over-driven bass drivers in the back that cause the entire trunk to vibrate at 35Hz. Sounds like a farting car, to me.
How's that bliss pmbuko - I can't imagine how that is fun, as that isn't the way it's supposed to sound - lol.

Dust is definetly one of mine. i cant stand dust on my stuff. at all!
I even go to extremes. Blow off drivers etc with canned air, and clean the ports. as picture below.

DJ- Yeah the Ionic breeze works well in my theater which is approx 2400 cubic feet (not square). It takes care of about 75% of my problem, and I do not have to dust as often. Which is nice b/c not only do I have my gear in there, I also have my MR props, and Gentle Giant minibusts in there also. Even though they are all in protective acrylic cases it's still a PITA to dust.
BTW, nobody goes into my theater unless I'm there unless they like broken bones. That is what the family room is for.
