Like the title says. The hoist at work broke away from the floor while i was inside this truck and my foot got caught in between the door and the door sill. Was alone ,had to call 911 to get free.

That's crazy. I hope you're okay Socketman.

Not a fan of the suspense.....It's disconcerting.

Posted By: Gr8_White_North Re: Bad Day at Work pics inside - 01/16/12 10:01 PM
yeah just a sore foot, xrays nothing broke.. Could have been alot worse,i was only part way in as i was looking for something inside the truck.Glad i wasnt leaning in with just my upper body. There was absoutely no warning. Been using that hoist for 9 yrs and bitchin about it. There is a lot to be said for a good pair of steeled toe boots.

Have you had a 2500 on that lift before?

Maybe weak concrete, or insufficient lag bolts?

Glad you are ok, This could have been a completely different story if 1 or 2 variables had been slightly different.

Yikes!! I'm glad you're OK.
Posted By: MarkSJohnson Re: Bad Day at Work pics inside - 01/17/12 12:11 AM
Yeah, glad you're OK. It could have been much worse!

I mean... now that you've got all this new equipment to live for and everything.....
Posted By: jakewash Re: Bad Day at Work pics inside - 01/17/12 12:54 AM
From a fellow socketman to another I am glad you are OK, have had a few close calls similar to that myself but nothing where the hoist came loose from the ground, YIKES. Now the shop should have the concrete inspected to be sure it is still strong enough to handle the hoists so this doesn't happen again.

Yowzers! Glad you are OK!

Good thing you had you cell phone handy...
Posted By: Wid Re: Bad Day at Work pics inside - 01/17/12 01:17 AM

If there has been a lot of salt or calcium chloride brought into the bay (from salting the roads) over the years it could have weakened the concrete. It wouldn't surprise me if the concrete wasn't flaking some before this happened.

Yeah, Richard; that had possibilities for a real disaster. Glad that you're okay.

ive had bigger than that on there. The other guy who used to work with us would not use my hoist, scared him. It flexed alot and i always felt the base of the posts were to small. A local machine shop put a spacer underneath that one post to try and level it out and im not sure that was such a good idea now. This is an old shop and the concrete was never properly tested. it should have had a new slab pored imho. Kinda leary bout goin under a hoist now.

I am kinda lucky in unlucky situations. MC accident that crushed 3 vertabrae and green stick fracture from knee to ankle. full recovery. Also rolled a car at 18, 5 days in coma. I have a purpose on this planet i guess. Thanks for all your guys concern.

Wow Richard, You are one tough dude. Glad to hear you were not hurt as badly on this one. It had dangerous potential for sure.

Curious, at least around here, lifts have to be inspected by a Gov. agent once or maybe twice a year. The shop has to pay for this inspection as well. I think that is to discourage back yard mechanics from buying them. Is there a similar process in the Yukon?

Since, thankfully, you were not seriously injured, I feel compelled to make jokes, but I think it still may be too soon. How's this Thursday sound? Will that work for you?

Makes me grateful that OSHA has never seen my home-made rigs to do three-story entrance foyer ceilings. Especially since I have to get wasted to go up there in the first place.

Joke away, i have thick skin lol. As for insopections there is nothing here, not even when its installed. No concrete testing etc. I pulled one of the bolts out this morning it was broken and corroded. We are a little behind the times here.
Posted By: Gr8_White_North Re: Bad Day at Work pics inside - 01/17/12 05:14 PM
i pulled the bolts out and 4 of 6 were broken no wonder it let go. it had steel bolts that the machine shop put in when they put the spacer in. The bolts are suppose to be anodized ,the other post has hilti bilts that are specific to the task. We get alot of snow melting off vehicles and use alot of calcium up here even in summer.

Dude, with each new post it seems you got luckier and luckier!

This could have been sooo bad.

Here's an incentive to be more careful:

I MUST outlive Bob so that he will not be available to start, or contribute to my Mortuary Thread.

Too bad, Rich, 'cause I've made tons o' cash over the last 32 years betting on it. I live to win. No, I literally live to win.

The MRI just to re-confirm the Bells Palsy diagnosis of New Year's eve (a bit late, eh?). It's already >80% gone, not that any of the selfish bastards here have asked.
Posted By: MarkSJohnson Re: Bad Day at Work pics inside - 01/17/12 07:01 PM
Hey! _I_ asked! mad

Oh, wait.

No, I asked you how it would affect me.

Well, I was close.

Feel the love Bob.

I've done some work on cars in my day. Doesn't matter how the car is off the ground, always been paranoid about being squashed. Glad yours accident turned out ok!
