I've been planning on getting a pair of M80's for a while now. Since my HT remodel is about complete I think I might actually pull the trigger. I'm thinking about getting a VP180 to go with them (unless I decide to get the VP160). Anyway I've really been spending a lot of money lately and that needs to stop so I'm looking at trying to save a few bucks on the stand for the center channel. Looking at the FMS180 it doesn't appear to function much differently than two of these, here is another same model with a different picture and specs (but $10 more).

I'm curious if anyone with the VP180 thinks that would work.

I have it easy for my VP180. Since I have a false wall, I am just going to construct my own stand tonight using left over 2x12 material that was scrap from my riser build and a piece of 2x14 that I don't even remember where it came from. A few cuts, a few ringed nails, and some paint and I am done.

Just remember that the VP180 is a beast and needs a sturdy stand. I would guess that the VP160 would be similar in the solidity of the stand.

The ones that you linked seem like they would work. They are slightly tilted upward, and two should be plenty solid. They look to be the same or very similar models, so the only factor after that is the height and if it works. For me, I need to get pretty tall so that the center is behind the screen, but if I wasn't going that route I would think that the height of those stands would be pretty good for below the screen.

Aren't all center channel speakers supposed to rest on top of your TV? wink

I like the look of that stand. I'm a little concerned that the part the speaker actually rests on might not be deep enough for a VP180.

I did a quick measure of my VP180's rubber foot spacing. 28" wide and 12" deep will just fit under them. Obviously the width isn't a problem since it would be 2 stands, but you will want at least 12" deep. So in order to get those stands to work, they would need another "plate" on top of them as they are NOT deep enough. Good catch Tom...

Length = Depth?
Maybe, but it is still .5" not enough and it is the bigger of the two dimensions in question.

I like how the vp180 screws into the stand via the 4 screw holes in the vp180 that align with the stand. Makes for a sturdy connection.

I actually looked at the same stand they you linked, but ended up selling my vp150 to pay for aciom 180 stand.

I managed to make mine out of that scrap lumber and it will work just fine behind my false wall, but it is pretty ugly.

Nice and tall... "Ear height" on the tweeters...

Pretty darn solid and surprisingly not tipsy...

With some quality wood, some schedule 40 pvc pipe, a hole saw and a little planning, you could make a nice looking stand. The good wood for the top/bottom plates. Use the hole saw NOT to cut holes, but to cut "partial" holes in the top and bottom, clean and slightly scuff the PVC pipe, cut the pipe, epoxy into the holes in the top and bottom plates, paint...

You wouldn't need something really pricey like oak, but something with a night tight grain and no knots. You could go with a black base coat and then spray a light layer of "hammered metal" or some "textured" spray paint. Light coat being the key to a nice finish. Cover it with a hard enamel clear coat and you are done.

Ya I thought about building my own but I'm not very good with the finishing stage. Maybe if I force myself to take my time...

I hear that, Ben. I enjoy building things, but I hate finishing them.

You could use some cedar, for an inside environment; you wouldn't need to worry to much about the finish stage. When i build an equipment rack, i am planning on using rough cut cedar... if you didn't want the rough look, you could aways just sand it down "some".. However,I don't think that i will be doing any sanding at all, since sanding buys you into staining/sealing smile.

The problem with cedar is it's a softwood. and it dents if you look at it funny.
