Anyone in Kansas City going to get it? Here's hoping for an avalanche of rollouts that somehow include my area. Gigabit internet with the same upload speed? Yes, please.

If that what i saw dragging behind the Google car yesterday as it went through our neighborhood?
I knew there had to be some way they could update info to the net so quickly.
The problem i saw was when the car turned a cornder the fiber would trip up people walking their dogs.

I live in Kansas City, yes. But it's about twice what I'm paying now. So, I don't see me paying twice for something with no real benefit. (Other than Axiom speakers, that is.)

I can understand Cat's sentiment somewhat.

If you only email and occasional browse a few web pages, then a gig isn't going to mean a whole lot to some people. For other's, it is to drool for. However, one is also limited by all of the other bottlenecks between you and and the servers you are trying to hit. Also, many of the servers you hit, probably won't dish out data at that rate even if you could get a clean pipe the whole way.

The decrease in latency would be attractive to gamers, but again, you may be limited by bottlenecks elsewhere. However, when every millisecond counts as an advantage over your enemy, cleaning up those first few hops can make a noticeable difference.

The real benefit comes into play for services being provided by Google. Having a gig pipe between you and your voice or TV provider gives them a huge advantage in the number of TVs they can provide signal to in your home and in minimizing any compression they apply to the sound & video. A HUGE advantage for a TV provider who wants to sell their product based on signal quality.

Personally, I'd pay good money for 1 Gbps but I wouldn't recommend it for every user as it really depends on your needs.

Well, it also depends on what you're currently paying, and how much sand your provider is putting in the vaseline.

I'm scared of the bigness of Google, but I am in favor of competition. I can only get Comcast or Century Link. They both make me want to hurt somebody real bad.

I dont think so. If you get cable TV and interent, your at 120$ a month. Comparatively speaking this is quite inexpensive for what your getting. Also, you will possibly be getting uncompressed video... That is one of the big benefits from Verizon right? With the bandwidth that Google is offering, you could have multiple HD streams at a time, all uncompressed.



I will agree, that if ones internet usage comprises primarily of web browsing/e-mail then, yes it would be more speed that would be needed..
However, as we receive more of our services through an internet connection, then more speed will be nice, even for the average user.

I'm paying around $90 for JUST internet from Charter, and it's up to 100 mbps down/5 mbps up. Gigabit internet both down and up, along with a terabyte of cloud storage for $70/mo is an insane increase in value for someone like me. It would finally be realistic for me to back up my entire music library in FLAC to the cloud, since I'd have the space and the bandwidth to do it, although I am approaching a terabyte's worth of music. That cloud storage is the biggest draw for me, since you're right about other bottlenecks limiting whatever else I'm doing online.

While I was only talking about the $70/mo plan, I do think I'd opt for the $120/mo plan to get the TV service. A little more expensive than my current Charter subscription, but I think it would be worth it.

The question of HD streaming seems moot to me, since there is no legit way to cheaply get the video after you're shelling out for the extremely fast connection. I can get Netflix and Amazon in HD on my FiOS 15/5, so until Google manages to find a business model that incorporates "free" video content, it doesn't fly.

Just read a little more, and I'm being a maroon. Nemmind...

My internet needs are e-mail, browsing, updating firmware. And that's about it. I use CD, DVD, Blu-ray, and UHF antenna for everything else.
