Keep in mind that the $1500 RS750s are $700 dollars more than the $800 M60s.

jcinwylie,
You may want to send a private message to Curtis. I believe he (and possibly spiffnme) have done some serious Rocket listening.

jcinwylie,

If you do a search on this forum for the 750's, you should find a good deal of opinions of both.

I have listened to both critically and to my ears, the 750's sounded like you were sitting on the 25th row of a concert compared to the first or second row sound of the M60's. Others have noted the 750's sounding like they have a blanket thrown over them with the M60's not...

Needless to say, I now own the M60's.

Hope that helps.

I have done as much research as I could in a day or 2 and have found that lots of people call the Axioms "bright".
Posted By: jcinwylie Re: M60's vs Rocket RS750 by Onix - 05/24/04 08:25 PM
I actualy own a set of Axioms: M60's, VP150 and pr of QS8's. I also bought the Hsu VTF-2 to go with the set. I like the sound but because of my limited knowledge in audio, (I'm a newbie) I want to know what my fellow axiomites think the difference is. I am going to be visiting a good friend who owns the Rockets and will post back here with my ears' results. Thanks for the info.
Posted By: Ken.C Re: M60's vs Rocket RS750 by Onix - 05/24/04 08:27 PM
I call them "Bob." But that's just me.

Many (most? all?) around here call them "accurate."

A question that was recently posed was, "Is a cymbal crash bright?" Yup. If you want the real sound of the music, you're going to get bright sound.

Is there anyone in your area who has them? You could also listen to the B&W 700 series, which are said to have a similar sound to the M60s (at large multiples of the cost.) {edit} whoop, I see you got your post in before I did. Nevermind....

Are Axioms bright or are the other speakers just dull?

They've been dulled for mass market consumption; warm and fuzzy.
Posted By: metalaaron Re: M60's vs Rocket RS750 by Onix - 05/26/04 02:08 PM
two very different beasts.
i wouldn't say that one is better than the other. i tried the 750s and they weren't for me. the midbass was excellent, but in my ears the treble was a little lacking.

fair warning - if you don't like them the return shipping will cost you ~ $178

Hmmm... I just posted my experience with both speaker lines, which was quite positive about both Onix and Axiom, and now I find my post deleted. What gives? Doesn't make a newcomer feel very welcome, I must say. It will be interesting to see how long this post lasts...
Posted By: bigjohn Re: M60's vs Rocket RS750 by Onix - 05/26/04 06:03 PM
that would piss me off too.. i saw there was an axiom webmaster in the 'whos online' deal earlier in the day. but this board doesnt really edit its threads very much, if ever. are you sure it ever posted at all?? just trying to take out the 'human error' factor before we jump to conclusions(i have the floor game version). anyway, there have been some pretty heated debates and arguments dealing with different companies on here, and they wernt edited or deleted, so this is kinda a new deal.

if you dont mind, try and post it again and see what happens. we love speaker reviews/comparisons.

Please do try to post it again. I've never seen any post deleted here unless it started getting into personal insults and unacceptable language (and very rarely, even then).
Posted By: BrenR Re: M60's vs Rocket RS750 by Onix - 05/26/04 07:00 PM
Ghostwheel - I've never seen a post deleted here - was it a language problem? Did you actually see the post, or could it have been a server error?

I'll stake anything you'd like on the fact that your post, if it was deleted, was not deleted for its editorial content. That you can be sure of.

Right. And in the very rare cases where an obviously offensive message has been deleted, the post itself has remained but the text was replaced by "post deleted by Axiom". There are LOTS of threads here that would have been severly edited by other webmasters.
Posted By: ghostwheel Re: M60's vs Rocket RS750 by Onix - 05/26/04 07:53 PM
I'm pretty sure it did post, because I saw it at the bottom of the other posts, and the counter had changed from 11 to 12 and then back to 11 again after it was gone. It was a straight-forward opinion, no swears or personal attacks at all.

However, you guys are pretty convincing that some kind of error ocurred and it was not intentional. (Although Mom did always say to never trust an addict...)

It was a relatively detailed post describing the three systems I have (one Rocket, two Axiom) that I don't have time to recreate right now, but I will try again when I get home tonight.

Please do, not sure what could have happened but everything people have said here so far is true. And deleted posts really are maintained but say something to the effect of "post deleted by axiom". I think I have only ever seen one or two of them.
Posted By: BigWill Re: M60's vs Rocket RS750 by Onix - 05/26/04 11:00 PM
I'm sure that Axiom did not delete a post critical of their speakers - I've seen many that are still sitting there to this day.

OTOH, I've had at least 2 posts deleted for such innocent things as commenting on a guy's haircut/portrait and for listing the various ethnic groups of Hawaii in the local pidgin.

If Axiom deleted posts for other speaker manufacturers, you would probably not get as many results when you search HSU and SVS. Axiom is a very humble company and understands that not everyone is going to like thier product. So your post was not deleted by Axiom.

OK, let's try this again. No doubt I will be unable to recapture the spontaneous eloquence of my first post, but perhaps I can be more succinct

I have not heard the M60's, but I have RS750's (and RS300's, RS150's, and the RSC200)as well as M22's and M3's. There are differences between these speakers but I don't find them as dramatic as some of the rhetoric would have it. The Axiom's could be described as comparatively "bright", but I think a lot of this is source-dependent as well.

My upstairs system consists of an average Sony CD player fed through an Audiosource Amp 2 to the M22's. This system can definitely reveal some of the harshness typical of a digital source. I'll soon have a Foreplay (tube) pre-amp sitting between the CD and Amp, which I suspect will smooth this out.

Downstairs in the recording studio, I have M3's fed by an Echo MIA (professional sound card) through a Behringer mixer into a Carver receiver, and they sound very neutral. Carver is often referred to as having a "warm" sound, so perhaps this is a factor. The MIA puts out a +4 signal, so it is very hot and sensitive to small changes.

The Rockets are in the HT, fed by a Denon 2200 into an Outlaw 950 and 7 Outlaw (200w, more like 300w into the 6 Ohm 750's)monoblocks. This system blows away anyone who hears it, as it should given the relative cost.

I would place the 750's at the head of the class, but they are also the most expensive. One major factor is that I find the 750's less fatiguing for long periods of high-volume listening. On a non-sonic note, the Axiom finishes can't really compete with the Rockets, but this was never a deal-killer- the Axiom's in Beech go better with the living room than the Rocket finishes would, and vice-versa in the HT.

I am happy with all my systems, and am not really itching to change anything (except maybe swapping out the Amp 2 for a couple of Bottlehead Paramours)

Comparing on price alone, I would give the edge to the M22's over the RS150's. They are more revealing and detailed. The M3's are just a tremendous bargain, all comparisons aside. The 750's are in a different class though- I'd really like to hear the M60's or M80's in comparison. For the record, I've never understood the "muffled", or "25th row" comments about Rockets- I just don't hear it.

I think Axiom and Onix are both great, and look forward to a long association with both. So ultimately this is just a long-winded way of saying: "Ya gotta hear them for yourself!"

thanks for the input! something must have gone wrong before as there's absolutely nothing in here that I would see of deletion.
Posted By: ghostwheel Re: M60's vs Rocket RS750 by Onix - 05/27/04 03:14 AM
This time I pasted the post into a .txt doc, just in case.
Posted By: Ajax Re: M60's vs Rocket RS750 by Onix - 05/27/04 04:15 AM
Articulately put! I'm glad you made the effort to give it another try. Very wise to paste it into a .txt doc.

I think the "25th row" comment is meant to be more descriptive than insulting. Axioms endure their share of "descriptive" comments also.

I found your comment about giving "the edge to the M22s over the RS150s" very interesting. I compared the two side by side here in my room, and I felt the same way. Have never heard the 60s, but don't doubt that I'd like them (especially powered by monoblocks. YIPES! ). I have no idea how they would compare to my M60s, which I like very much.

I'm kinda funny about the Rocket (and, for that matter, the Axiom, and others) finish thing. I have black speakers and endure all kinds of insults, hereabouts, about how ugly the blacks are. But, I like them. The wood grain finish speakers (Axiom or Rocket, or anything else) kinda locks one into a decor matching situation. Basic black goes with everything . (Now guys! Save your defensive "I don't have to match my speakers" comments. I'm talking about how I'd feel, not how you feel ).

We have another Bottlehead fan around here; haoleb. He's in Hawaii, so he gets here late. I suspect he'll be chiming in here sometime soon.

Thanks for going to the trouble of rewriting. Be sure to stick around.

That's why all you old buggers have three black marryin' & buryin' suits.

The Beech was an easy choice for me... it looks more like maple than the maple does and I'm a big fan.

I hate to pop your balloon, but I don't have even one suit, black or any other color.

Jeez! I hope none of the REALLY old guys on this forum (like Ray) croak. I got nothin' to wear.

So I guess you're not dressing up when I visit next week? And I brought this tuxedo for nothing?

I just wanted to make a good impression with your mother.

Of course I'm dressing up. I ALWAYS dress up for company. I've got my best T-Shirt nicely ironed, my pull-on camping pants are washed, and my orthopedic shoes, for my arthritic feet, are spotless. How much more dressed up can ya be?
