I've seen many forum members contribute lovely, elaborate drawings of their listening rooms.

I'm interesting in acquiring, learning and using some software to help me with floorplan tasks (subwoofer positioning, furniture rearranging) and also with a couple of small outdoor construction projects (an awning for our deck, some patio work).

I am not fluent with current tools of this type, and don't need anything elaborate or state-of-the-art. I'm good at learning new applications, but I want a quick start.

Any suggestions on cheap, easy to use software that might be good? Is this something that I should already be able to do using something from the Evil Empire like Paint or Draw or ???

My wife bought me a bundled program several years ago. Unfortunately it is outdated now and certain functions are glitchy on a win2k/winxp platform.
Nonetheless, it was very useful and lots of fun to play around with for room and garden design. It was the Broderbund Total 3D Home Suite Deluxe.
I think they still make some version of it. The other consumer grade program that i've heard is not bad is something by Sierra but i'm not sure they make it anymore. I googled up this page which might be helpful. This page also has a list.

I had been using Softplan in my drafting class i was taking, its very easy to use and if you knew what you were doing... you could design a whole house in a day.

Not too sure how much it costs though... i dont think its very cheap. of course, you could always get around that... as in download it somewhere.

Microsoft Paint can help you make some drawings although not to scale.

I've heard good things about the Punch! software, and I might have a really freakin old version of Sierra Home somethingorother around. I was just trying to avoid graph paper if possible. I appreciate you taking the time to help.

Strangely any time I begin drawing on graph paper, I keep trying to draw in a Kobold Lair... maybe a little niche where some orcs with blowguns could hide... poison save vs. constitution... roll d20...
