On August 24th the DVD we've all be dying for will finally arrive. Yes, I'm talking about Purple Rain 20th Anniversary Edition

Two full discs of purple passion! I know personally I'll be throwing a Purple Party to celebrate the occasion. Purple Rain in remastered/remixed dolby digital glory. All of my audio purchases to this point have been made for this one disc - and it's finally arrived!

i have the original version on dvd, but the sound is definitely lacking. i just dont know if i am enough of a fan to shell out the $27 bucks for a movie that i already have? hopefully, it will come out for rent, and i can just run to BB for $3.99 and give it a look.

but i am looking forward to hearing that awesome concert footage in dolby digital. i regret that i didnt go see him in concert.. he is quite the performer.

oh, and appollonia in that movie!!! GROWL!! she was my first latino princess crush. oh the thoughts of a raging teenage boy.

I would think a trip to the Twin Cities would be in order to celebrate. I'd be happy to get you to 1st Avenue-where it all began. It's still one of the best clubs in the country for live acts. I had the privilege of seeing the Purple One and the Time at 1st Ave a couple of time pre-Purple Rain. Great showman, but more impressive for me was seeing how phenomenal a guitarist he is at close range. What's your review of Musicology? Haven't picked it up yet, but what I hear I really like.
The Musicology cd is pretty good. But being as big of a fan as I am that's not the most objective opinion you could get.

If you get a chance to catch the current tour - DON'T miss it! That's some advice that's not only coming from me, but also just about every newspaper in the country that reviews the show. It's stunning.

The early days of Prince at 1st Ave were fun. I saw him several times in the early 80's, often he would just be there in the club and get up with whoever was playing. He used to walk around in a canary-yellow suit with a huge bodyguard.

I remember seeing Jah Wobble one time, no slouch of a bass player. Prince got up and did some killer guitar work, and then grabbed a bass and outdid Wobble himself!

1st Ave is still a bargain for entertainment. Saw a great show by Stereolab last month for $15 bucks!

You are of course referring to "Big Chick Huntsberry".

Does anybody know if they've released, or if there are any plans to release the Purple Rain Soundtrack on dvd-audio or sacd?

I'm not sure how that soundtrack would sound in either of those formats, but I think it'd be interesting to hear the song "Purple Rain".

Nope...there's no DVD-A or SACD's currently available, and I've not heard of any plans on releasing them in the future. He entire catalog of earlier recordings could use at the bare minimum a remastering and new release even if it's only as a standard CD.

*note* - Diamonds & Pearls was released in VERY limited quantaties in SACD format. I've yet to be able to track a copy down, and have a standing bounty of $50 for a copy if anyone should get one for me!

I missed the concerts this week in the Bay. However, I got tix for his Sept show. Can't wait. Seems you also get a free CD at the concert too.

Anyone see the Chappelle show takeoff on prince? That was pretty funny. Let's play some basketball!
I saw that. Funny stuff!

You get a free copy of 'Musicology' when you see the show. No fancy jewel case, but it's the full album.

Yeah, I know. Only Purple Rain is getting the special treatment though with an extra disc of special features. Sign 'O the Times is another disc that's LONG overdue! In fact, it's never been released on DVD before!
