While lurking on another audio board, I read a comment that said when you turn off your CC and go with phantom mode, you miss some sounds that were mixed for just a center speaker.
Is that true?
I would think in phantom mode all sounds meant for a center would be reproduced in the mains.
What are your thoughts on this?

I believe you're correct. Anything originally mixed for the center should be redirected to the mains, no?

I suppose I could be wrong...it's been known to happen once in awhile.

Did you happen to read that today, as in April Fool's Day?

I believe, although I can't confirm it 100%, that any time you turn off an option channel (all but the front L and R) on all surround receivers (5.1 and up), the material gets redirected to the mains.

Bray, Spiff, Peter,

Yep, the stuff mixed for the center is all re-directed to the mains. The center content may not be as clear and intelligible because it's not coming from a dedicated center speaker and you can't separately adjust the center volume, which may explain why some think that you "miss some sounds" in the phantom mode.

In effect, you would, for the aforementioned reasons.

Regards,
