With all the paypaling going on around here lately, I just wanted to alert you guys to the latest paypal fraud.
This morning I received an e-mail saying "a new address has been added to your paypal account". When I clicked the link to verify, a screen that looks IDENTICAL to the paypal screen came up and asked me to verify my credit card and bank account #s. Being that everything looked right I almost typed in all the info. I'm not sure what stopped me, but I first tried going to my account on this page, when nothing came up I then realized that this was a fraudulent e-mail. I called paypal and then forwarded the e-mail to them. The paypal guy on the phone just seemed annoyed that I had called.
Another statement on a recording said that paypal will never ask for that kind of info via e-mail and that any e-mail sent would address you by your 1st name (this one didnt).
Be careful. If you do receive an e-mail like this forward it to spoof @paypal.com.

Thanks for the heads up, Bray.

The fraudulent e-mail was also typed in an old typewritter font.(kinda faded)
Also I did realize a few minutes ago that I had logged in on the link with my paypal password, so to be safe, I went ahead and changed it.

I have seen many of this type of e-mail also, but this one "looked" VERY good.

My wife and I both run businesses on ebay so we use paypal more than is good for the mind!! We get these spoof emails all the time for both ebay and paypal and even for banks, etc. that we don't even have accounts for. NEVER, NEVER respond to them. I know that some of them look so real you can't tell if they are or not but none of these sites will send anything to you asking for passwords, etc. We probably err on the side of deleting some that are real but that's OK.

Bottom line, good decision. Glad you didn't enter any data.

If you get one and want it verified from PayPal, forward it to spoof@paypal.com and they will respond on if it's legit or not.

Amazingly enough, they actually do it relatively fast.

I either delete those messages right away or actually fill out their phishing forms with bogus information to give them a virtual f*** you.

In my experience, it's easy to tell if an e-mail is of the phishing variety. Most of the ones I receive don't acutally contain text, but are instead images of text. You can tell if you put your mouse over them and you get a hand instead of an I-beam cursor.

Yeah, I get that same one about 2 to 3 times a month. Similar one from ebay. Be careful of that "typewriter" font. Looks like a scanned image.

Pretty much I never respond to any of those types of email.

I've gotten so many of these in the last couple of weeks that I don't even bother to send them in to Paypal anymore. I have several secondary email addresses that I use when I don't want to use my personal email address. It's sort of a dead give away when one of these paypal phishs arrives at one of those addresses since no paypal account is associated with any of them.

I have my anti-spam program set to recognize the address from which these emails are emanating. So, for the most part, they are labeled as spam by the time I even see them.

I actually got forged Snail Mail from 'paypal' as well - you just can't be too careful. It was an email with a phone number to call to update your account if there wasn't a flashing 'update your account' button when you logged in. Clever trick!

Hey, I got that also. I didn't know it was fake. I guess I lucked out. I didn't do anything about it and eventually deleted it.

The most sure fire way not to fall for these is this: if you're not sure, go to your web browser and type in the website's address yourself--don't click them links! (ie type in http://www.paypal.com--NOT what they write!) Usually, this will prove the imposters.
