I'm considering an audition of a VW Jetta. Does anyone have any experience with these? I've read some really negative reviews about them. Based on these, I'm leaning towards forgetting the whole idea.

They have some of the nicest interior designs in the automotive industry. Being a German car they do have their idiosecrencies(?). Maintenance can get pricey with those German parts(Bosch). The Jetta, as well as most VW's, has traditionally been a fine road machine in terms of handling and drivetrain performance. For a front wheel drive car it feels very neutral in corners, never understeering(pushing). I took a GTI 16V thru an on ramp curve at rediculus speeds, and when it's limits were reached it swung it's rear end out, but the front end stayed planted. It was sweet!

Bruce, did you forget this thread where craigsub replied to you?

I have a friend who went through two Jettas and is now on his second Passat. He loves them all.

A girl in our office has a Jetta and she loves it. I had a Golf diesel and loved its handling.

Personal preference, I guess. I have a Ford F-150 now only because my wife didn't like the price tag of the Toureg.

Nah,

I didn't forget. I just thought I would ask for some opinions on this model, since I have an appointment to look at it, but I have read some really, bad reviews about it in the last couple days.

This whole car thing sprung out of a situation with my eldest boy. The Mrs. was searching for a different set of wheels, so she could give the boy the old set of wheels. The whole plan has been derailed today, since the boy just returned from the local Hyundai dealer with a brand, spanking new Elantra. I'm just waiting for the phone call which will go something like this, "Dad, would you give me some money. I can't afford to pay my natural gas bill with the monthly car payment being due."

Have your son call into Dave Ramsey's Radio Talk show...

Dave will set him straight...

Had a Jetta and a new beetle. Both were great running cars. Only complaint was little stuff kept wigging out: window switch, door lock actuators, ac, and some minor trim issues. No major mechanical problems, just little stuff. If there was a VW dealership nearby, we would not hesitate to buy one. Just something about owning a VW that is different than owning any other car.
