The Matrix is not 6.1, there was no 6.1 when that movie was released to DVD.

The most authoritative list of 6.1 DVD's that I'm aware of is here

Hi,

Before everyone gets all worked up over Dolby Digital EX 6.1 and dts-ES Matrix, some clarification is in order. The extra "6.1" channel on these movie soundtracks is NOT a discrete channel. It's derived from the left and right (discrete) surround channels in the same manner as Dolby Pro Logic processing derives a center channel from the Dolby Surround matrix.

While the 6.1 processing with either decoder can supply a pleasant enhancement to 5.1 material, it's not the same thing as a 6.1 discrete channels. The latter are available with dts-ES Discrete discs, but there are very few titles in that format currently available. Indeed, the argument can be made that dts is a totally unnecessary system. Having to include it on DVDs eats up additional bandwidth and processing power that could be better applied to other features, and since there's no discernible audible difference between the two systems other than differences in the mixing of soundtracks (dts tend to mix the LFE deep bass at higher levels), dts is a redundant system.

This isn't to take away from the enhancement possible with 6.1 systems, by the way.

Regards,

My ears tell me DTS sounds better. It seems to fall under the same category as speakers (ie...which speaker is better?) Well only your ears can make that decision.

Alan,

I have a question to ask then.

If 6.1 is just coming out now, then why are there so many 7.1 receivers and amp? I have never seen or heard of anything mixed in 7.1!

A couple of movies that I would recommend for good sound quality that are DTS, and/or have the 6.1 matrixing are:
- Gladiator - The first battle is very impressive.
- Star Wars Episode I - The pod racing scene really gives the sub a work out.
- Saving Private Ryan - This is DTS and all the battle scenes sound great.
- Castaway - The crash scene is good. Also, I like hearing how crisp the sound is when the waves are crashing against the shore. Very clean, almost like your there.

I have the Axiom mini system and I push them to their limits with these movies. I'm very impressed with these smaller speakers.

The crash scene in Castaway gives me the willies!!!

In addition to the recommendations made, U-571 has phenomenal sound.

As to the 6.1 issue, some receivers are capable of addressing the newer DTS 6.1 DISCRETE standard, but I've never seen any indication as to whether or not these DVD's are using a discrete or matrixed signal there.
