I want to spend about 800-1300. I live in an apartment so I dont really want to blow the house down but want good sound. IM looking to just go 2.1 with reciever with possible 3.1. Is it worth it to above the 22's in a small environment. Any advice what to look at?

M22s and an EP175 will get you there... and will be enough for most moderate sized living rooms, you can add on surround speakers and a centre if you want at a later dater if theatre becomes more your bag.

Whereabouts are you? $800-1300 goes further if it's got presidents rather than prime ministers on it.

Im from the us and remeber I need an amp and what takes presedence a center or a sub? Also should I stay away from the 50's and 60's in an apartment?

You could go:
-M60s without a sub
-M50s without a sub
-M3s and VP150 without a sub
-M22s and VP150 without a sub
-M22s and a EP175
-M22s and another manufacturers' sub
-M22s, a cheap sub and a VP100

By the time the bass geeks (I kid, I kid 'cause I love!) around here get done with you you'll end up with an EP600 and an eviction notice, though.

JohnK and others should be able to find you a good price on a receiver... that's really not my bag.

Fire, welcome. The M22s with a good sub should be what you need for a small apartment. Even if you're thinking about music more than movies, however, also go with QS4 surrounds for a 4.1 setup. The surround sound naturally present(in varying degrees)in two channel materials can be extracted and sent to the surrounds where it belongs. If you order from Axiom Outlet you'd get 10% off and if you order five items together(e.g. add an RCA coupler for a few dollars)you get another 5% off. Subtotal about $750.

For a good small sub to fit your budget consider the Outlaw LFM2 for about $300, plus shipping. Subtotal about $1,070.

For a receiver get the Onkyo 503 factory refurb which is on sale the next three days. Register for "Club Onkyo" and you get 10 points, worth $10 off on a purchase, plus for this weekend there's a 10% off sale, which makes the net price about $133, with free shipping. Subtotal about $1,200.

You didn't mention if you already have a CD/DVD player; if not, one of the Sony changers for about $150 would be fine.

I use a Falcon rod ( heavy action ) with a Abu Garcia baitcast reel .

Forge, the 22's and a decent sub will sound excellent. If you want to expand your system, the next on your list should be surrounds. Forget about the centre in a 3.1 config. You will be surprised how well a "phantom" centre works.

Wid, nice setup.

I agree, the two mains can simulate the center channel, so I would start with either two m22's or m3's and a sub, or two m50's or m60's with no sub. Later as your budget permits you could add the sub or surrounds. As John mentioned you save 10% from the Factory Outlet on the Store page, and another 5% if you buy 5 items or more.

For receivers, there are lots of good options. Heck I noticed on Walmart.com the other day they are offering some great deals, including 2 Pioneer models, $258 and $499(THX cert.)

Welcome to the club.

The big question now is m22's with a sub. Or m60's without a sub.

For the receiver, I highly recommend the Panasonic SA-XR55S. I bought it to replace my Nad C320BEE when I decided to upgrade to surround, and I just love it. It was on sale at amazon for $149 when I got it, but it's up at $169 now, which is still a great deal!

If you are at all thinking about H/T I would suggest the M22 with a sub.

I agree with Rick but would add that if this is for music only, I'd go with the 60s. In an apartment, a sub will likely give you problems with neighbors and not be needed for 95% of most music listening unless you're a bass-head.... (which I admit to being at times!).
Posted By: fireforge Re: Working with a budget - 11/25/06 05:51 PM
My use is 80% HD/t espcially football and xbox 360 and 20% music so the 60's or the 22's with an outlaw sub hmmm tough choice.
Posted By: MarkSJohnson Re: Working with a budget - 11/25/06 05:55 PM
Yeah, even the XBOX might lean me towards a sub to be honest. Cool neighbors...especially below?

Im on the first floor so thats not to much of a problem. Man you ever think about investing in ear surgery?

Im pretty into sound purity over power.

Is something wrong with my ears?
Posted By: fireforge Re: Working with a budget - 11/25/06 06:16 PM
I was just joking with ya. In your picture you have foam ears on. sorry didnt mean to offend. It just came out wrong when I followed it with Im pretty into sound purity and by no means was that aimed at you in the slightest.
Posted By: SirQuack Re: Working with a budget - 11/25/06 06:39 PM
Dude, those are not foam ears, they are real. Mark is a very good listener.
Posted By: richeydog Re: Working with a budget - 11/25/06 06:52 PM
I don't think Mark is offended by your comments. It's sort of like a running joke around here.

Now if you start talking about his square room and how bad it sucks...watch out!!!

Seriously.

Is something wrong wih my ears?

LOL! You guys are too much.

I am also an XBOX 360 fan and a sub is definatley the way to go. JohnK has a great set up listed for you for a little over $1000. Go for it!
Posted By: Wid Re: Working with a budget - 11/26/06 01:04 AM
I would agree with the system that JohnK has listed except for the sub. Hsu has the STF 2 on sale for only $20 more than the Outlaw LFM 2.

With shipping to Il. the Outlaw sub was $2 more, so it might be cheaper to get the bigger, more powerful STF 2 once shipping is included.
Posted By: fireforge Re: Working with a budget - 11/26/06 01:52 AM
I really appricate the advice you guys are giving me. I think im gonna go with the 60's instead. I think it will be a better balance of bass for an apartment with a later option to add a sub if I move to a house.

Im to worried the sub will shack the apartment down. Even with the xbox 360 I dont need the additional bass. What accories is worth picking up if I do go for it. Im totally lost what wires im gonna need? I just can push that buy button.

You truly have the lobes for business.

Pity they're not good enough to get you a new room. You know, one that's not so... square.

<evil grin>

We need an evil grin smilie. Seriously.

With those lobes, I hope your wife knows how to give good oo-mox.
