Has anyone here used a Yamaha (model HTR 5730) receiver with M80, QS8 and VP150? I'm considering getting a used one, and will want to use it with my Axiom speakers for the next 6 months or so.

Ravi, it's unlikely that you'll find someone who's used a 5730 with that setup. The usual principles apply: unless you play the speakers so loudly that the current draw is excessive and the protective circuits shut the receiver down, everything will be fine. If you do get it, don't set it at 4 ohms; that reduces the maximum voltage available and therefore the maximum current and power.

Unless you'd be getting a real good price on that 5730 you might also consider the Onkyo 504 factory refurb available for about $160U.S. from Shop Onkyo, which is a bit better unit.

Ravi, I've been using the 5660 with the Epic 80/600 for almost 2 years now with no problems. I've got it set at 8ohms, and its NEVER shut down. The system is in a large open area, and at -15db on the master volume, it'll hit over 100db. Much past that, the sound starts to fall apart and I cut it back.

I've been extreemly happy with the Yamaha, which I got refurb'd off ebay for $180 Cdn. Cons: I wish it had an on-screen display, and in that size of room, more power.

Depending on what you can get the 5730 for, the Onkyo that JohnK posted looks interesting - especially for $160.00!

I don't know why he claims it's "a bit better unit". (It could very well be) Reasons John?

With all due respect for your Yamaha 5730, M80s are great speakers and deserver a better receiver. You probably know this anyway, since you're only buying it for the next 6 months. What is next if I may ask?

JohnK, good idea about the Onkyo, but I'd have to pay shiping and duties and taxes on it, bringing it to at least $250.

I'm only using until I either get a high end Sherwood Newcastle, or something similar (i.e. Denon or HK) that has HDMI and the new codecs for HD discs, and auto room EQ, etc... I had a low end Denon that played nicely with my setup, and was planning to sell it when I bought the new receiver, but then my dad's receiver broke and he offered me a good deal to purchase it, so I sold it to him. In the interim, I'm using my stereo HK receiver, but am desperate to go back to surround sound, and as well I'll use the Yamaha for a bedroom surround system (I'll be attempting to build the speakers myself!)

i sold my yamaha 5930, which looks alot like the 5730, to my brother. he is using it with an epic 60 system, and it is working out for him. I know this doesnt cover the 4 ohm vs 8 ohm situation. also the 5930 doesnt let me set separate distances for the left/right front/surround speakers, so the primary listening area needs to be an equal distance from the left/right speakers.

i think it would work for 6 months, but i wouldnt want to get stuck with it forever. I like my denon 2807 twice as much, but it costs 5 times as much

Ravi, at $100CAD the 5730 is the way to go(assuming that it's in good condition)rather than the 504, which is a 7.1 receiver with some additional features(which lab tested very impressively, Shawn). Again, played within it's power limits, it'll be fine with your speakers.

Once I pick up a real receiver this summer (maybe the Sherwood Newcastle R-972), I'll shift this one to my bedroom and try to build my own little 5.1 surround sound system in there.
